I live somewhat off the beaten path, surrounded by orchards (apple) and am interested in giving beekeeping a try.

Welcome! You've found a great place for information and conversation.

The Beekeeper course on this website, at http://www.beemaster.com/honeybee/beehome.htm is a great place to start.

Beekeeping for Dummies and The Backyard Beekeeper are two good starter books, but I've found that taking their advice and incorporating advice here in these forums and on Michael Bush's (a member of this forum) site http://www.bushfarms.com/bees.htm is a good plan, especially before buying equipment.

OK i updated my location, near Lake Champlain not far from Burlington Vermont.   I like the info on the Bush Farm site.   How are those vertical Kenya long boxes in the cold country?  They look super easy to make and deal with.   Also, is it too late to get into this endeavor this year and at least get started?  If it isn't then point me the way. grin

TBHs shouldn't be a problem for you.  I have wintered them just fine.


If you want one that is real simple to build, here is one I made out off a plastic 55gal drum (actually made 2 from one barrel).

 

It will probably be too late to find bees this year.

Those look simple enough for sure.   SOOOOOO whats me next step to attempt to get things going this year or at least set up for next?    It looks like I could build a couple of those Kenya types in under an hour.    Whats needed other than that so as to get things goin? afro afro

Get your equipment ready for bees and call the local fire and police departments to ask to be put on their swarm control list. I haven't seen a swarm in my area in the last three years other than the ones that left my hives for an unknown destination but it is still a possibility. If you have a bee club within a reasonable distance you might also want to attend one of their meetings. One of the members may get a swarm they might give or sell you at a reasonable price to get you started. Good luck in locating some.
