That destruction reminds me of Cyclone Tracy that hit Darwin on Christmas day 1974, when 74 people were killed and 30,000 people evacuated to the southern cities. 90% of the city was destroyed.
The only good to come of it was that houses were rebuilt as "Cyclone proof" if there can be such a thing.
Of course, our mates from the US deployed in a little known and overlooked support role.
Back then, when I was a boy, there was no internet, limited satellite images for warning and live outside broadcasts were not common, It took a few days for images to filter through.
Many residents did not return and made a new life down south.
Darwin is now a thriving city and has the highest growth rate of any Australian city. Mainly due to relocation of military units to "The Top End".
