Need real-time data from your hive?

Do you need real-time data from your hive telling you the weight, temperature, humidity and CO2 of your hives? If you have some distance to your hive, this stuff can be quite cool (and quite expensive) as it sends the data via GSM to your computer.

That'd be neat, you'd just have to hope no one would tinker with it.

You can also do this with a microcontroller called a Basic Stamp from Parallax
http://www.parallax.com/
. The controller is programed from the serial port of the computer and you can hook multiple devices to it (also sold through Parallax). I am making a controller that checks Temp & humidity, turns on/off a fan acordingly, and sends the Temp and humidity data to a PC in my house through a radio transmiter capable of transmiting 3000 ft. All this is avalible through Paralax. The planned cost is $90 per hive and $90 for the single receiver on the PC.

That's very cool! Would like to hear more about your project. How is the API? Is it tied to Windows, or could it be programmed in other OSes? Looked at different sensor technologies, but haven't heard about parallax. Nice prices.
Where do you place the sensors in the hive?
Hope you will keep us informed about this
