About those equal rights

"TRENTON, N.J. - New Jersey's highest court opened the door Wednesday to making the state the second in the nation to allow gay marriage, ruling that lawmakers must offer homosexuals either marriage or something like it, such as civil unions.

In a ruling that fell short of what either side wanted or feared, the state Supreme Court declared 4-3 that homosexual couples are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual ones. "

The news report as stated is somewhat inaccurate.  The court actually declare 7-0 that gay couples are entitled to the same rights and privileges as straight couples.  The split comes in how the rights are to be extended.  Four justices directed that the legislature decide whether marriage be expanded, or whether a "separate but equal" form of union be created.  The three "concurring and dissenting" justices felt that marriage rights should be granted, period.

News sources don't always get the facts right.
