My State (NEW JERSEY) just began a NO SMOKING in PUBLIC SPACES (restaurants, bars, anywhere inside - except the GAMING FLOOR in ATLANTIC CITY - this is wrong too! If people wish to gamble, they can go outside to smoke. I can see this as a loss of income IF the Casinos weren't allowed to smoke, but why is OKAY to subject non-smokers to carcinogens and the stink of cigarettes in exchange for the "Privilege" of gambling - it is NOT.
New York City has seen a robust increase of eatery patronage BECAUSE people can now go into restaurants WHICH PREVIOUS were so small and intolerable because of the smoke filled atmosphere, only smokers were going to these places before. NOW, everyone can go and enjoy the great foods of NYC.
I think that DESIGNATED SMOKING AREAS (DSAs as the Federal Gov calls them) should be protected from the weather and separate from the establishments, but protecting the smokers from bad weather isn't always possible (especially in NYC where every inch is precious space) obviously, minimal DSAs are set up there, but in the suburbs, urban and country you have much greater flexibility to accommodate your clientele.
I look forward to visiting eateries (I'm not a bar kinda guy) but to sit down and enjoy dinner WITHOUT some idiot lighting up as I take my first bite will be a pleasure. If you are SOOOOOO addicted to smoking that you cannot survive a meal without one, you have greater issues than just smoking. You are an addict, killing him/herself and you are trying to take the rest of us with you.
I know I got off topic, but I don't feel like making a new post - lol. I honestly believe though that all business will PROFIT from being smoke free. A waiter/waitress should NOT be subjected to the UNFILTERED END of a cigarette just to get stiffed on the tip because YOU need to spend $5.50 a pack for your smokes. At least now IF YOU STIFF HIM/HER for the tip, you won't drive a nail in their coffins doing it!!!!
