Thorium …..No thanks.
No matter how you want to market it, fission of heavy atoms (Th, U, Pu) is a messy dangerous business with fission byproducts that will be radioactive for centuries and longer. U233 (the "fuel" from your Thorium) has a half life of 159,000 years.
If you want to bet the farm on Nuclear Energy, I would go with Fusion. Fusion is what powers the Sun. Fusion uses the most abundant element in the universe for fuel; Hydrogen (or isotopes there of). Cheap and unlimited fuel supply, ZERO chance of a meltdown, and very little waste. The only tricky part is overcoming the electrical repulsion force between Hydrogen nuclei long enough for the short ranged Strong Force to take over and fuse the nuclei into Helium; releasing a bunch of energy in the process.
Maybe a good holiday project for some beeks?
