Regional Question: NE Georgia Sourwood

I have a connection for placing hives in Clermont for Sourwood honey. I'm told the Sourwood around here (Athens, GA) doesn't produce much nectar and you have to be up in the mountains. Is Clermont "up" enough or would I need to get to a higher elevation?

i'm a flatlander and we have some sourwood around here.  i don't know that they produce less nectar based on geography but there may be a higher population density in the mountains.  if you have an area with a high density it's not going to hurt to try it out one year.  i don't think it yields the amount of honey that tulip poplar does under any condition but i may be wrong.

Maybe not but Sourwood's completely delicious.

^^^^that's subjective.  i like darker honey.  if you ever get the chance to try sumac honey you'll throw rocks at sourwood.  it tastes no other honey i've ever tasted.  it's darker than sourwood but lighter than poplar.

We have sourwood around here.   Not covered up in it.  You have to look for it.   Wait until July and look for white.   Last honey of the season until fall.
