I have been reading about different stuff that can be put in the traps. I currently use vegetable oil. I would rather use something dry like DE, Boric Acid or Activated Lime
I was afraid that the dusted beetle might crawl back into the hive and harm the bees. Once in oil nothing comes out. Anyone out there use these dry materials?

I have not heard of a dry mix in a trap in the hive (beside checkmite). What type/ brand trap are you running in your hives?

Vegetable oil becomes toxic in time , thats why they never oil cutting blocks with it, use mineral oil good for laxitives also HAHA. with the beetle blaster thats all I use--But bee careful not to over fill , gets on Queenie it wil take her out.. JPP

I am using the "Green Bee" type of trap. It uses #6 mesh screen with an aluminum tray underneath. The tray removes from the rear of the hive. The guy offers the plans for free. The design made sense to me. I bought 6 from him and they really knocked down the small hive beetle. I just wanted to try an alternative killing agent. Do a search for "Green Bee" they work well. I have to change the oil biweekly.

The oil is really effective but a pain to dispose of. I wouldn't trade these traps for any thing. Building my own version this winter. SHB really active here. I live 30 miles from the place it all started, Charleston SC. |

Breaks the surface tension of the water so even the small light weight bugs fall through and drown. I use is to kill Japanese beetles. They drop like lead sinkers. Well, not that fast, but they drop. Like I said, I've never had to deal with the little devils, so don't know if it would work on SHB or not. |

Breaks the surface tension of the water so even the small light weight bugs fall through and drown. Like I said, I've neverdeal with the little devils, so don't know if it would work on SHB or not. The soapy water works but it evaporates so fast. In the summer I can't keep up with it. I work 4 on 4 off twelve hour shifts. In 4 days the water is gone. That's why I was looking for something dry. |

What? You got DRY heat down there in Georgia these days  Good point about the water evaporating! Something I don't worry too much about up here...normally. Is there any kind of electric grid zapper thing to kill the SHBs? You know, like the blue light bug zappers? Fry those beetles |

What? You got DRY heat down there in Georgia... Is there any kind of electric grid zapper thing to kill the SHBs? You know, like the blue light bug zappers? Fry those beetles Summer heat here in SC is not dry it's just that water is wetter than the air. I like the bug zapper idea. I'm thinking a old neon transformer, 30kV, and two separate screens with the needed gap to prevent continuous discharge. Anything gets between them and ZAP!! Sound crazy? A little R&D, it just might work. Sure would be fun to watch. |

On "Bee Hive Journal" they suggest to use pink RV antifreeze in traps, it's non toxic, less messy and cheaper. Haven't tried it myself but I plan on trying it.
