That is very interesting. Perhaps a behavior designed to keep intruders from seeking refuge from storms in hive ? A defensive reaction to dropping barometric pressure.

That's not it.  Their joints start to ache and they get really cranky.  I know some folks like that, too.

Sun just broke thru, 52 degrees, B's on the feeder  First I've seen of 'em in 2 days.

Here in N. VA we only got the outskirts of it on Monday night.  I'd gone out the day before to just look at the hives, didn't even open them up, and a falling acorn "thwacked" on the top of one of them.  Didn't even occur to me that they would've cared about it until I happened to look down and see six girls already stuck in the leg of my jeans with more pouring out after me.  Hauled ass to the house, and still don't know how I managed not to get stung.

I am finding these reports fascinating. I wrapped mine up, put concrete pavers on em, strapped em down and never as much as saw em peep out the entrance.

 We lost two of our hives because of rain damage when they fell off the hivestand. They were ratchet strapped together but the force of being knocked of the stands opened them up a bit and they took in a lot of rain water through the openings. One of them was by far our strongest hive but I guess the water damage was too much for them ?

Cold rain/water will kill them every time.  Sorry for your loss.
