In Michigan, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing to prevent Secretary of State Ruth Johnson from adding to the ballot application a yes/no question: “Are you a United States citizen?”
The ACLU says the question should be removed, partly because it could cause long lines in November. Why? How long could it take? If you’re not a citizen, why are you there — unless you want to vote illegally?
Dare I ask some of our members from the great state of Michigan what his ideas are on undocumented immigrants voting in Michigan's elections.

Don’t worry Kingbee all those illegal Canadians crossing the border up here aren’t going to be swaying our vote for Obama. To vote in the great State of Michigan, you need a driver’s license. While other states seem to hand out drivers licenses like candy; they don’t here. To get a driver’s license you need the following: 1.) A valid Social Security number. If I’m not mistaken; the Feds only give out SS to US Citizens. 2.) Legal presence in the USA. Again that means illegal’s can't vote in MI. 3.) Identity. You gotta be who you say you are! 4.) At least two docs of Michigan residency. On top of the valid driver’s license, you can only vote in the township you live in and they have LISTS of valid voters in the township. If you’re not on the list, you don’t get to vote! When you vote here they check your ID (and you) over head to toe to make sure nothing is fake. They are more thorough than the TSA, if that makes you sleep better at night So why is our Republican Secretary of State adding a completely pointless question to the ballot would be my question to you? The state already has all the bases covered. What’s the next question the Republicans want to add? Can you touch your nose with the tip of your tongue?

" To vote in the great State of Michigan, you need a driver’s license." So you are saying a person who never learned to drive, or who got too many speeding tickets and lost their DL, or has a medical problem that prevents them from driving, cannot vote.
I would have to see documentation on that before I would believe it.
2 seconds to check yes or no, and you have another enforcement tool in case of someone being charged. How does that hurt?

I guess I should have said you need a state drivers license OR state issued ID which has the same requirements.
Personally I think there are a lot better things for the ACLU to do that suit over this trivial point. I don't have a problem with the SofState adding the question, but it is a little redundant.

... To vote in the great State of Michigan, you need a driver’s license.... You mean one of those drivers licences that the 9-11 terrorist used. No. Anyone can get a Social Security number, it is required to hold a job regardless of your citizenship state. A green card and a SS# are not the same thing. Your getting all balled up in that theory thingy again BlueBee. In a very real sense the ACLU is an arm of the Democrat Party. The ACLU is trying to confuse the right to vote in Michigan's elections with being a citizen of the World. Democrats don't want any Chinese or other foreign goods on sale in America except that is for the fraudlent ballots of illegal voters and the Dems are more than happy to buy everyone of those ballots even at the expense of Michigan Union working families... as long as the illegals vote a straight Democrat ticket that is. ... So why is our Republican Secretary of State adding a completely pointless question to the ballot... By your above reply my contention is unfortunately proved true. It is a Democrat and ACLU scheme to violate the 14th Amendment by trying to circumvent the doctrine of, "One Man One Vote!" as decided in the Reynolds v. Sims case in 1964. All current Civil Rights are dependant on the doctrine of "One Man One Vote!"

To vote here you need either a, rent receipt, a utility bill, a fishing licence, a paycheck stub, a US passport, a military ID, a non-driving ID card... and oh yes among other things a drivers licence.

With the new voter id laws here, my grandfather has not gotten to vote since they came out with the picture id law. It is really sad that he can not vote because I know who he would vote for even though he has been dead now for almost 20 years. Grandma was never much of a voter.

http://www.dmv.org/or-oregon/voter-registration.phpand once you have become a registered voter, they never see you again because all of our voting is done by mail. yes, they are supposed to compare the signature on the security envelop, but that does nothing to check the legal status of the voter. + uncle fred can fill out all the ballots, get the clan to sign their security envelops, and uncle fred has just cast as many votes as there are kin he can pay off.

Oh, he's a Chicago Democrat then. Truthfully though, the local politicians use to come by my Grandfathers house handing out large sacks of sugar in exchange for votes. With some canidates you went to the polls on election day marked your paper ballot and then held it up to the window of the polling place. A local poll watcher (almost everyone knew everyone else) standing outside noted your vote and gave you a chit for your sugar. If you worked for the county or for the school system you showed your ballot and then got to keep your job. I have seen the latter system in action with my own eyes.

Anybody can check a box yes or no...
I think the states all should go back to the old way of you having to be present to vote... Stop all this "early Voter"/"absentee ballot" carp.
The early voter states allow you to vote weeks early..You cast a vote by mail and then the debates start.... you watch and have second thoughts about your vote... Oh well.. Too late. You cast that Vote for Obama, but then found that Romney was pretty good in the debates...

Stop all this "early Voter"/"absentee ballot" carp. i agree and the longer things are strung out, the more chance for errors...intentional or not. used to be in most states that unless you were out of the country or were going to be out of the state, you couldn't get an absentee ballot. now all you have to do is ask for them. + there is a sense of community that is lost when you don't have to show up and vote. it takes some effort to GO vote, but none to pitch a ballot into the mail. and...(sorry), it seems that the state/count has a much easier time calling special elections when it's vote by mail. we just had one for our county when it would have saved money and been as easy to have waited for the November election and put the measure on that ballot.

I've never really understood what all the hooplah is all about with the ID thing. In Florida, we've had to show a DL or State ID since I cast my first vote 32 years ago... no big deal.

I agree, Doug. If you're legal...you're legal. When all they ask is to expend some energy, reach in the billfold and hand them your ID it doesn't seem like there would be folks complaining. But, I guess to some folks that seems to much like "work". Or, maybe they *do* have something to hide. I agree with doing away with the early/mail-in/whatever voting. If your vote is important to you then you "need to be present to win". Our military men and women excepted, of course. Ed

Our military men and women excepted, of course. there are a few other exceptions. people who can't get out, people working/traveling overseas or away from voting site. still, it should be the exception, not the rule, to vote absentee....and i hate what our state does. then there is this.. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705393928/Oregon-adopts-iPad-voting-system.html?pg=alli don't know if this program is still running.

What amazes me it is almost always Democrats are the ones having a problem with their voting sector being able to comply with ID laws. If I were a Democrat and my party leaders looked at me with the thought that I'm too dumb to get an ID and Republicans overwhelmingly are not,I would reconsider who I chose as a leader. There is talk that voter ID disenfranchises voters. Well I can say I feel like my vote gets stolen evry time an illegal votes or someone pulls off voting twice. This does seem to happen more with Democrat votes. Perhaps this is the voter block they are trying to protect?

All States require a state issued ID to vote. The voter ID laws are requiring a state issued ID to register to vote. The concern over this is quite simple... The elderly lady or gent in the registrars office currently must Register anybody who fills out a voter registration card... The new laws allow him/her to throw out registration cards if the person does not produce a Legal State Issued ID. No big deal really... everybody probably has an ID with them anyway... The issue the NAACP and other groups have with the law is the ability to discard registration cards... If you are in one of the many small rural districts across the nation where the Registrar of voters is also the town clerk, tax assessor, and dog catcher... There is no over sight...
So Instead of registering every voter they can legally use the excuse that they did not produce an ID and can discard any card that they want to... If your black and they are racist... cards in the trash... if you are registering two a party in opposition of their political views... cards in the trash..
That is what this is all about.
