who pays the beekeeper and for the supplies? if it's not her, then that honey belongs to us.

"Nay, it [this constitution of government] must perish, if there be not that vital spirit in the people, which alone can nourish, sustain, and direct all its movements. It is in vain, that statesmen shall form plans of government, in which the beauty and harmony of a republic shall be embodied in visible order, shall be built up on solid substructions, and adorned by every useful ornament, if the inhabitants suffer the silent power of time to dilapidate its walls, or crumble its massy supporters into dust; if the assaults from without are never resisted, and the rottenness and mining from within are never guarded against. Who can preserve the rights and liberties of the people, when they shall be abandoned by themselves? Who shall keep watch in the temple, when the watchmen sleep at their posts? Who shall call upon the people to redeem their possessions, and revive the republic, when their own hands have deliberately and corruptly surrendered them to the oppressor, and have built the prisons, or dug the graves of their own friends?

The bees and hive belong to Charlie Brandt who is a beekeeper and a staff member at the White House. So no worries, not your tax dollars.

Obama could be grafting queen cells in the south lawn and many beeks wouldn’t cut him any slack. I say kudos for the Obama’s for bringing bees to the White House and national attention Leave it to beeks to trash the idea

I think it is great for us to have an Unofficial Bee Ambassador at the White House. Even if it was on the tax payer dime that 1 hive and extractor might be 1000.00 tops, that is a small price to pay for the publicity it gives us. A single hosted meal at the White House costs much more than that I am sure.
The hive of bees didn't cost anything. From what I know when the chef for this Administration took over the kitchen he heard that Charlie Brandt was a beekeeper and started talking to him about bringing out a hive. Mr Brandt offered to move one of his hives to the White House lawn and our Bee Ambassador was born.

While I am always glad to see bees and beekeeping getting good press it troubles me to see the ladies keeping such bad company.
