Has anyone ever seen a cicada killer wasp?   I have a dead one right here at my desk.  It measures 1 1/8" long.  It came out of one of about 20 ground holes at the gas station pump island.   The holes look like rodent holes.   The manager said they start coming out when it get hot and he has been spraying them

My boys like catching those for their bug collections!  Cute little buggers!!  rolleyes

Anything that hauls cicadas around has to be pretty impressive!

We have tons of them here. Its been breeding season for the last month or so. They are solitary insects that build nests in the ground about a foot deep. You can walk right amongst them. They will not bother you but they are parasitic of cicadas and other insects. They can get up to 1 and 1/2 inches long!

Took a picture last night of a cicada killer carrying off honeybees.  The bees were bearding outside the hive and the cicada killer was flying in, grabbing a bee, and flying off with her.  Happened about five times.

(Had a nice picture of this, but I haven't posted enough times to be able to post pictures.)

I know hornets will carry off honey bees but I didn't think cicada killers did.

Intheswamp,
I am currently paying my kids 0.25 cents for every one that they kill.  I know they are suppose to be helpful but when I find them just sitting on the landing boards grabbing bee, I figured it was time to do something.
