Steve there is a lot you can learn reading these threads. You can also check on you tube, and see if there is a local bee club, or at lease a local beek. Good luck.

I'm sure you'll find this forum to be a great place to learn more about bees and beekeeping.
You also should check out the website/blog of David Burns, and Illinois beek who has over 100 online beginning beekeeping lessons. He also teaches beginner's classes at his bee farm, and is a great guy to know:
