I was to the picnic last year free of charge.I think what he meant was he'd rather have the whole group together for a picnic and  discussing topics of choice rather than pay 600 for an hour or two of a speakers time. I can see where he's coming from.
The Penn Apic picnic was open to all beekeepers,members or not and wanna be beekeepers.A good deal for people to meet and talk bees. Smiley
