Got back into Beekeeping after about 10 years and thought I would summarize whats going on so far and ask if you guys think I missed anything or if you have any tips and tricks for me.
Last time I got started I was 13 and a kind old Beek sold me 4 roaring hives for about $200 (doubt that even covered the equipment they were all 4 or 5 boxes deep)and they did great for a few years then one winter all of them disappeared from their hives.
This time around I started from scratch bought new boxes and frames and all then installed 3 new packages about 13 days ago. Looks like everything is going strong all 3 hives are taking a quart of syrup every 2 days or so. On first inspection after about 4 days they had some comb drawn and filled with syrup and pollen at the top and sides, and there were eggs in some cells and little tiny hooks of larva in the others.
Today when I checked on them I see everything from eggs to capped brood in all 3 hives. The thing that concerns me a bit is it looks like I've gotten quite a bit of drift from two of the hives into one. All 3 do have bees one just has 3 times as many as either of the other 2, I'm hoping in 7 days or so when the brood starts to emerge that will fix the problem.
The 2 smaller hives have 3-4 frames drawn out with brood pollen and syrup in them the largest hive has 7 frames nearly fully drawn some with capped syrup along the top and when I checked them today they had some comb running between the frames I scraped out everything that was drawn out the wrong way hope they will fix it.
Anything I've done totally wrong?
