Merrill Tool Box

ya'll have inspired me. I have been staring at one in the catalog for over a year now. So I picked 20.00 of 1x12's and 1x8's this weekend. I'll start on it when I get done nailing together swarm traps.

I really liked the look of the Merrill tool box in the catalog but couldn't justify the purchase with shipping and everything.  I had enough scrap laying around from building deeps that I just decided to dive in and build one.  It may not be quite as pretty as the Merrill box but ours is just as handy and I couldn't imagine not having it now...it makes things so nice and easy to take on a cutout extraction or to the apiary.  Still have to find a nice piece of webbing for a shoulder strap and that will be the icing on the cake.  I really recommend buying the Merrill or building one for yourself as I have done for Julie and I.  Here are a few pictures of my "ugly Merrill wannabee"!!  Note the screws sticking through to the inside that I have since ground off and difference in the orientation of the hinges on mine verses the Merrill.

Love to putter in the shop, so am building my own.  Don't have the problem with trailing a smoker in the back of the truck as the hive is in the back yard.  Just wanted something to carry "all" my junk in one trip!  All about making beekeeping easy and fun!  That's why we got into this in the first place isn't it!

My mentor has a box similar to these.  I don't think it's a "Merrill" box....  He has some mobility issues and also uses it for a stool to sit on while inspecting brood boxes.  His box is probably 18" tall (tall enough for him to sit on comfortably with knees bent naturally) and it has an open compartment beneath the closed box area.  The pivot handle is a flat metal one that attaches to either side(like a bucket)

Simmonds, my mentor's box has no handle on top...handle might be a problem when sitting on it.

Ed, yes I can see how that could be a problem!   
I am thinking of ditching the handle one I get some quality webbing for a carrying strap.  Maybe I will attach a small piece as a handle as well then I could also use mine as a stool.
