Bees sealing lid vents
«
on:
January 27, 2012, 03:04:58 AM »
Hi,
Being a new beek I'm a little concerned, I've notice the bees have filled the vent holes in the migratory lid. Last time they did it I cleaned the vent holes when I was checking the hive.
Now they've closed them up again, should I just leave it sealed up?
Cheers,
Tony aka LV

the holes might be too small...
do you use a matt on top of the frames?

Not sure on the size, I'll have to take a photo of them. I don't use any matt on top of the frames.

They seal up everything. That's the downside of providing vent holes, you have to clean them out!

bees don't think ventilation is as good an idea as we do.

They will generally clean them out themselves when they want to.

Some days the vents on my lids are glued and some days they are open. I don't clean them as the bees seem to be able to take care of it them selves.

I figure if the bees want fresh air they will clean them out themselves... I don't clean any of my vents and the only time mine have ever gummed them up is during winter - in summer they open them...
