Shelf life

First: I want to thank the BeeMaster for this GREAT forum. I would also like to thank everybody that works to keep it that way.
 
I have browsed through a moderate portion of this forum and have found an amazing amount of information. (Somebody should mine it and write a book!) I have also found redundancies (OH, and thank you for the spell checker), and unnecessary remarks (to be polite), and out-dated links and the ongoing tug of war, over political / economic issues. I have posted some remarks that are a waste of the electricity that keeps them alive.

My suggestion: Put a shelf life on the posting - Two years?
I realize that I am asking for someone to do extra work for my benefit!

Should somebody decide to, 'separate the wheat from the chafe' and write a book. I Would Buy It.

You're talking about killing the archives?  There's so much information available through the search feature that deleting old posts would be a crime.  As for someone writing a book from the information deposited here...I feel pretty sure that has already been done, and might be being done again.    The archives, to me, are what make a long-lived forum...a forum that intentionally limits itself to two years would seem shallow to me.  John has done an excellent job with Beemaster, there are older, larger forums but I believe this one has about the best "community" to it.

That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

IMO: There is too much stuff that is not information.

OK, here I am whining, about FREE information! I am looking a gift horse in the mouth! (admission of guilt - nothing else implied)

Maybe it's ignorance, but anytime I use the search feature; there is a lot of stuff!
I see two solutions:
 I) go through the entire forum, post by post, and delete all the unnecessary posts. A huge undertaking!
 2) write a short program, that let's the old posts die at the end of a certain time frame.
 -Maybe three-
 3) Ignore the ungrateful so and so. (trying to inject a little levity)

The staff here is completely volunteer and most members prefer it the way it is.We are also a commercial free site,no banners and such parading across the top of every page. that is why we rely on volunteers. I have considered it an honor and privilege to be a moderator here for the last four or five years and things work pretty well among us.John may comment differently,but this is my take anyhow.

There are some members that have posted valuable information that may have been posted some time ago.
Don't look for any big changes soon. Perhaps there is a way to narrow the info search.
 One of the things that a lot appreciate is that we don't mind if the question has been asked before.Most here remember they were new and had a lot of these same questions. I have been told some places blast you for asking a stupid question. No stupid questions here.
The ongoing tug of war on political/economic issues is what the Coffee House section was created for.Some times we miss these subjects and they get started in other sections,but we do our best.
Don't let my comments discourage you for making suggestions. they are all appreciated,   Thanks.

As a P.S to the above post.
It takes a lot of time reading through the majority of posts every day as it is ,so we may keep it a pleasant place to visit.There is a lot the staff does behind the scenes to keep filth  out that many people don't realize. the internet is full of creeps looking for every open door.We try to slam them shut before they ever get in.And sometimes it ain't easy.

Shelf life...  makes it sound like there is an expiration date on this information...  DUH!!!

Hey!!!   It ain't broke so don't fix it!!!!!!!     I am a new beek this year and it was the "old stuff", or better put as someone said, ARCHIVES...   that helped me find answers to questions and concerns not addressed on a daily basis.

Thanks all for the very kind words.

I do agree fully that no matter how many times someone may ask "What's your favorite smoker fuel?" or "What's the worse place you ever got stung?" I'm always glad to see that "new answers" always appear in posts and the archives. This occurs as new members add their tales to older member's postings to aid new members - it is a wonderful thing here, the most seasoned members still help out with the most common of questions, even when asked a hundred times before, nothing makes a new member feel more welcome than a personal reply rather than someone saying "Check the archives for an answer!" I think that is unique here and it is something I am very proud that our members participate this way.

But I need to clear something up that is long over due and it needs to be said in public: Buzzbee foremost is our eyes and ears of our forum, not taking anything away from any of the other mods who serve more of a technical role - but Buzzbee reads ever post imaginable and is our first line of defense against any issues that may be brewing. For that I can not thank him enough. So often I get all the credit, and it is very over-rated what members assume I do here. Life has dealt both my wife and me health issues and other curves that (along with 60-80 hour work weeks) keep me away from the forum way more than I'd rather be.

You tend to see me come out of the woodwork when someone's hands need a good slapping or when the mods collectively decide on major issues such as member status, and I prefer to be the guy who dishes out the punishments or do any cleaning up of matters - better to air your issues of disagreement toward me than spread it all over the mods. An important point though, all the mods are very capable of banning members and they will always have my 100% backing, all of them are strong, knowledged in the rules and will do whatever is necessary to keep the forum running friendly and respectful for all the members.

So, I needed to clear that up. I get patted on the back much too often, I do the forum layouts creating new forums to let members socialize more, I participate in mostly the general forums and check out our moderator's forum every day - I'm here when needed, but Buzzbee, and our great techies Robo and Eivindm are in my mind and in my heart the GREATEST TEAM a forum could have. I just wanted you and them to know that.
