Hmmm...I can still see my dog running in the grass (well, I can see the grass moving anyhow...I know he's there) so I can probably put off fixing the lawnmower....again.  Priorities, ya know! ;)

Where will it all end???!!!

Tis only the beegining my friend, tis only the beeginning. This is only my second year with them, but I wished I had done this 20 years ago. (Cuz if you split 10 hives twice a year x 20 years) Wa ha ha
VolunteerK9, I hear ya.  I can tell the fever is rising!  I'm starting out kinda late (53) but I hope to have another 20 years or more with the bees...then I'll leave'em for someone else to marvel over...hmmm, 20 years...doubling each year...yeaaahhh, that's sounds about right.  Sugar by the truck load!!!!  <chuckle>  Well, maybe I won't get *that* big...but I am already wanting to grow!  The idea of AMF bees is mighty appealing!!!

bulldog, I understand how you were sucked into the bee spell.  Easy-peasy.  Yeah, they used the old "this dude wants pollinators" scam on you and now they got you feeding them up, housing'em, worrying over them like a mother hen.  Ah well, next it'll be planting clover for them.  Then looking for goldenrod seed to harvest to "naturalize" the edges of the orchard.

I'm catching myself looking at any new (at least I think it's new to me when I first see them) flowers.  I've even caught myself stopping to check out some leaves that were turning fall colors.<duhhh>

I believe I know of the one you are speaking of. Is it this one? https://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/March192008

The man who owns this house is a Forensic scientist. He claimed the bees had been in that ceiling for fifteen years when I removed them.

That's the one!  Now that is a thing of beauty, a queen's kingdom for sure!!!  What a maze of comb!  15 years, eh?  For a newbee like me that would be an exciting find but also a very intimidating one!!!!  You done good on that one!!!  I'm still plotting and planning...  I've been studying bee-vacs.  So far I've located 8 feral hives and have two more possibles.

Down below is a map of the feral colonies that I've located in my local rural area.  Circles denote bee-yards and "stars" denote feral colonies.  Naturally the "Home" bee-yard is my place and no active colonies there yet.  The "Moore" bee-yard is a small 2-year-old 4-5 colony yard.  The "Davis" yard is probably a 30-40 colony yard and has been there for probably a couple of decades.  The "NEB" yard is my mentor's and currently has around 28 colonies but has had close to 50 in the past...it has been there a couple of decades, also.  Lastly, the "Welch" yard is where I may possibly have an out-yard later on over at the swamp.

These feral colonies are colonies that I've stumbled upon in talking with folks locally.  Most of these I have permission to "get the bees"...with a couple of the places the folks *really* wanting the bees gone.  Several of them would have to be trap-outs, though.  What I'm figuring on for the possible trap outs is to set up swarm traps nearby and try to catch the swarms they should throw off this spring...then do a trap out and eventually combine the trapped out workers with the swarms.  That's my plan for now, anyhow! :-D  I've got two stumps, three bee trees, and the rest in structures of different types.  We'll seen what happens!

Knowing it's probably just that I've talked to more folks in this area it still seems interesting that the largest population of these feral colonies appear to be oriented between the two large bee-yards.  I'm curious about what type of impact I may have from these feral hives...one thing I'm thinking of is a DCA close by.  There's probably many more colonies around me, too,...there's lots of folks I haven't talked to!

Well, here it is five months later.  I've got three colonies behind the house now (no swarms).  Sadly, I lost one swarm off of my smallest colony...they've started queen cells and the queen(s) should be emerging very soon.

I've got four swarm traps out and two more ready to deploy and thinking about a couple more traps.  The feral swarm just to the west of "home" on the map above is a very strong colony that I've started a separate thread about: Survivors in an oak tree....  I've got one swarm trap there and seriously thinking of a couple more.  Folks are becoming more and more convinced that I've "lost it"! ;)

It seems to never end. Those big orders that you put in that will be your last for a while just wind up lasting until the next big order you will place the following year.  :-D

Your bee yards just keep growing and growing & growing...
