...i'm reminded of the homeless guy i saw in nyc several years ago....with a sign that said, "need  money for beer".  i'm sure he cashed in on some that saw it as an amusing novelty....but i don't know of anyone that would feel good about giving $$ out of their own pocket to a panhandler only to watch it spent foolishly...beer, drugs, or beenie babies.

The numbers are not going to make this worthwhile.

Since they started doing this in July, only 2% of the 1,000 people who took the pee test turned out positive. That's less than the U.S. population of drug users as a whole.

And this is weird: welfare recipients are paying out of pocket for the tests, but getting their money back through their welfare checks when their pee turns up clean. So, if 98% of the people getting tested get their money back, the companies doing the testing are making a heck of a lot of money on a program that the state's paying to administer.

The testing plan is projected to cost $187 million. I really doubt that the savings from that 2% of welfare drug users is going to end up offsetting that huge sum.

That won't be known until we see how many don't get any more checks because they didn't get tested.

That's a lot of taxpayer money for a wait-and-see whose beginning doesn't look so optimistic.

But you didn't say if or how much less the monthly checks total compared to what they were before July. It may already be working if the reduction in checks is sufficient to cover the testing.

seems like a small amount to kick some drug nuts out of the system.  you are going to spend my tax dollars one way or another.  this makes me happy.  other ways do not.  500+ million to make nice showers and saunas in a failing solar panel factory does not.  bailing out unions does not.  come on...just give me this one please!

i'll tell you something else about drug testing.  in 1980 the military began doing random drug tests.  this caused a lot of us to choose career over the occasional joint.....or whatever.  you never know when you might be doing someone a favor just by making them choose.

Wow, $187 million for drug tests.  Maybe we should forget about trying to come up with a replacement for oil and start working on a cheaper way to test for drugs.  I wonder how many Welfare recipients will shave their head bald to hide drug use evidence?

I’m still with the Republicans on this one; I think it’s worth a try.  Sometimes you just have to experiment to see if something will work.  Pull the $187 million from the TSA!

yeah, don't think this is a party issue.  we all pay taxes. ditto the TSA.  never thought they were a good idea, but hoped they wouldn't be as bad as they turned out to be.

It's getting real good when they advertize on Craig's list that they will pay rent with food stamps.

""We don't like where were living and are looking for another place to stay. Were needing something asap thats in a decent area also. Were wanting something that someone will let us move in for exchange of getting you food, childcare or housekeeper...etc. My mom also has a sweet dog too. If you're not able to help me whole family and just me and my daughter, that would be fine too. Please if you could help me out, I'd really appreciate it""

http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/Articles/a%20Strategy%20to%20End%20Poverty2.html

you have to read about 1/2 way down to understand the strategy.  in a nut shell, it is to get as many people as possible onto some form of public assistance and then collapse the welfare system so that those people riot for their "stuff" and allow a takeover of the country.  enough people on the dole and you can force socialism on everyone....or in the case of Francis Piven, communism in a better form....because we all know it would work if they just did it right.

http://www.laborunionreport.com/portal/2011/02/francis-fox-piven-the-communist-manifesto-was-really-too-general/

as always, the communists and the labor unions work hand in hand for "fairness", "equity", "living wage", etc.

again, we have working examples of this.  Greece, Italy, etc.  get enough people dependent on government handouts and you have lost control of everything to them.  they riot in the streets until they get what they want, even if it means the destruction of their own economy.  Germany can bail Greece out until HFO, but as long as the takers are in charge, no good will come of it.

here is the drug test kit Dr. Drew uses on Celebrities - they go for under $6 each kit (a box of 2) and very cheap in huge numbers - imagine what the Feds or States could pay for them.

It takes 5 minutes to show results on up to 10 different substances. Let them fail once, but if they fail a retest one Welfare Check Later, boot them from the system, give their kids to people who want young children but can't get an American baby and settle for Haitians, etc..

I even would go for a mandatory rehab program (let's make jobs in this country) even if it is rehab and drug testers for welfare recipients. If they fail at any time for drugs during rehab, then they definitely go and kids are taken to a safer environment.

Here is the $6 for 2 test kit - add a system for implementation to test and clean house.

See??? That's the problem with you heartless conservatives!! You are so arrogant that you think that just because a person falls on hard times that you think that they are too stupid to know how to handle money and use it wisely!!  You think just because a person needs assistance that they are stupid morons who will just waste their money on drugs, tvs, cars, drugs, cable, shrimp, lobster, drugs and whorses!!  How charitable of you!!

(just had to get all of the liberal arguements out of the way  grin )

who said anything about kids?  this is about welfare money to drug users.  now...it might be that if the parents are spending their money on drugs instead of food, the kids do need to be taken away....i think its has always been true, so i see no slippery slope here....
