I line the inside of my outer covers with 2x4's or 2x6's and make the rims taller to accommodate.  I put a couple of 1/4" strips between the 2x's and the actual cover to create an airspace for added insulation.  For me this has the following advantages:

  • They are heavier so I don't need to put a brick or a rock on them
  • They provide additional insulation
  • I believe they absorb more moisture from the hive when used in conjunction with a vented inner cover

I like light equipment except for lids.  As you say, a heavy lid (especially if it is flush with the box all around) doesn't require a brick.

I’m having a hard time visualizing this.  Are you putting the 2x over a standard top cover like a mini wood deck?

no - inside;  just imagine an outer cover with a taller frame.  Inside this frame put the 2x's.  I'll try to get a pic.

I was thinking, why not use 2X4s or 2X6s for the lid frame, add a 3/4 inch plywood cover and a second cover over that made out of 1/4 inch corrugated plastic political signs, then add a crimped metal top over it all.  If weight is what you want this lid should be plenty heavy enough and the corrugated plastic sign will provide the added insulation you are seeking.

Why not build a form and pour a concrete top cover and paint it with waterproof paint and no need for metal cover, it will be heavy, help store heat in the winter and never rot.    banana devil  cheer

I use Mann Lake pallet straps and strap each hive to my hive stand due to high winds and tremors we get here in SF. Works great. The straps are only $1.50 each.
