Vacation - down south and by the ocean
« on: August 05, 2011, 02:19:48 PM »
I'm heading down to Beaufort SC to do some camping next week with the family at Hunting Island.  We're really wondering if we're crazy, now that our temps have cooled back down to the more reasonable 70's

I'd like to do some ocean fishing with the kids (a shark would be awesome!), as well as crabbing and whatever else may be available to do as far as catching any ocean critters are involved (shells, seahorses, etc).  We've been to the coast before, but it is all fairly new to us.  The kids are really geeked about going.

Anybody have any advice as far as any of that goes to maximize our experience?  I've done some reading but don't know what I'll be doing.

Thanks, Rick
Rick

Sunscreen.                    :-D

Find one of the party fishing boats.   Great way to get some fish easy.

Can't tell you too much about the coast, but you will probably be passing close to here. The coffee pot will be on if you decide to stop in.

Mapquest "Randleman, NC" and see how close your route brings you.

Thanks, iddee, I appreciate the invite!
We'll be getting close, but still a bit too far off our path on our tight itinerary, especially having lost a few hours to some van trouble.

... Anybody have any advice ...

Besides Sun screen carry one wide brim hat or cap for each family member going out on the boat.  Also a good long sleeve shirt apeace.  Remember, no flipflops or sandals on a saltwater fishing trip or you may experience Sun poising.

NEVER, NEVER touch or handle any unusual looking fish or one that has a lot of long quills or rays sticking out from their backs, and sides.  This is why there are 1st or 2nd mates on party boats, to help you and to school the un schooled.  If in doubt always ask the skipper or a mate if your catch is safe to handle.
