This made me think of a SOCIAL EXPERIMENT in the forum - one which I will NOT do, but it proves an interesting point.....
Imagine if I chose to ban the word "HATE" using the word filter in the forum and either replace it with BLEEP or some other less HATEFUL word. After all, HATE is a pretty strong word, quite negative when not in context and seemingly bad Karma in general - what would happen?
We would all have to adapt or adopt a different word to use, synonyms are easy enough, but of course ONCE you start banning words, you then must ban other words which replace the banned word, or why bother banning words at all.
Next thing you know, you have hundreds of banned words, many which have nothing to do with the original banned word, but words which are similar in meaning to words which are similar to the dreaded HATE word. So before you know it, thousands of words are banned and the effect is communications no longer achieves its goal - to communicate.
I hate censorship - I have a sizable list of words which are in the banned word filter, neccessary words that we should all agree are NOT needed in a family forum - but in a perfect word, no censorship should be needed, but none of us live in such a world.
But to ban knives because people can be cut or killed with them (as mentioned in previous replies to this topic) opens the door to banning anything and everything that could hurt, mame or kill - frankly, I think that ANYTHING could be used to kill another person.
I'm listening to an audio-book right now which has an elite Delta-Force of specialized killers who use guns designed to shoot packed snow bullets - it makes an ice bullet that either kills or mames the intended victum, then once captured the unconscience victum has handfuls of snow packed into their mouths to completely restrict air, they die within minutes and no sign of a weapon is found, it is fully absorbed into the body or simply melts away.
So lets ban snow, and ice and well... let's save the middleman and just ban water, afterall water can kill you a million ways. At the very least it should be a controlled substance. It is sad times.... Now your home can be taken away, NOT for making room for the improvements to traffic flow, or better building storm walls, etc., but simply for the need to improve local income through taxation, this is the scariest thing I have ever heard.
I'm located in a business/residential zone - imagine if my town decided to reclaim my property to increase the amount of businesses in our town. What recourse would I have if the supreme court is the voice who enacts this concept? I say I have none.
Nope, we are indeed in scary times - credit card companies are starting to charge for printed billing statements (forcing people to do on-line banking) or pay charges as high as $3 a month JUST for the pleasure of receiving their printed statement.
A president who has a smirk on his face that sickens nearly 70% of the population, and who also has lost most of his support in this Iraq venture that is a failure to date. The insurgence grows, the death rate grows, the length of time we will be there grows, as does the price of gas, the cost of living, the possibility of a draft - afterall, how long can you keep screwing over your reservists and enlisted?
The minimum wage hasn't increased in 8 years and remains a sickly $5.15 an hour. But in my area, homes sell for (an average) of $355,000 and a working young couple average $56,400 a year combined. Do the math and realize these young people are being setup for failure - the banks don't care, they just resell the homes again, this time at a higher price as the home value increases.
It is sad times. I've never been a GUN fan, it is something that I don't need in my life - but I don't deny anyone else their right to have arms. I do believe though that ammo should be better regulated than it is. Once someone gets a gun, there is NOTHING to stop them from having unlimited bullets for that weapon, I think that is where the weak link is, in the bullet end - after all, guns don't kill people, bullets do!
So, hide your kitchen knives, and your books - because books are next if stupidity gets its way. I'll just sit here waiting for the MOTHERSHIP to come down and zap all the stupid law-makers with a smart ray and hopefully we can all live without the fear of losing our homes and our lives, especially to the government that we elected to protect us.
