Tap Water Near The Hive
«
on:
March 20, 2011, 05:30:19 AM »
I know that bees can find their own sources of water but I read somewhere that it is advisable to place a source of clean water near the hive but if I'm already feeding them sugar syrup which obviously contains water, do I still need to place a source of tap water near the hive?
Hoping someone can answer. Many thanks.

I like doing cut-outs, but I love catching swarms!

I would definitely offer some type of watering set up, whether it be a fountain or pond...
You will not be feeding sugar water for much longer when nectar begins to flow.
Set up a water source now so they will have time to find/establish your set up as a water source or they will find their own.

I have seen them use bird baths in the past. Just float some sticks in it so they can get out if they fall in or fill it with fish gravel.

I think a bird bath is a great idea. I could use the pebbles from my aquarium on the bird bath. Thank you for this.

Get it set up and the bees acclimated to that source or the neighbor down the street with the swimming pool might be calling. I had three in my neighborhood back when and two were okay with it but the third was a ..... about it.
