G'day Ozbuzz,
I I know it's not the answer to you question however I bought Italian queens from Charlie Cassido in October. Six out of seven were successful & I now have three booming 4 story hives & two triples. The other one is a tale of woe but not their fault. They arrived when they should have & they give you a call when the queens are dispatched to let you know they are on the way. Can't fault them for service.

I think theirs are about $18 ea plus postage for less than 10 - don't quote me on that though that's just what i have heard through word of mouth

i know there is zillions of opinions on this and lot less fact, but i am reading a book right now that theorises that one of the biggest reason for large scale hive failures is because of a monopoly of reared queen bees. Its is thought that the most successful bee keepers are the ones who catch their own swarms or rear their own queens. Besides all of that everyone knows that the keys to success of any species is genetic diversity. Is it worth considering practises that encourage the hive to produce their own new queens instead of buying them from the same genetic stock? justthought  |

Theorists have a theory, we have opinions, experience and buying queens is just as good as rearing your own or doing splits or havesting swarms. What fits is usually the best.
I remember an old fella once said there's your way, my way, the correct way, the incorrect way and any old bloody way. Never gone too far wrong with bees using the way that works.
