we used to use french presses, but there is something better...an aeropress:http://aerobie.com/products/aeropress.htm
it is similar to a french press, but the coffee is forced through a paper filter, which removes some of the bitter oils (that are not supposed to be good for you either).
when i first got it, i had to readjust my pallet, as i thought the coffee was weak....it was STRONG, it just didn't have the familiar bitter taste that i expect from really strong coffee (similar to the first time i had good kona coffee). with this thing, i use cafe bustelo (cheap and stores well in foil bricks...$1.50/10oz) and make very good coffee. i turned michael bush onto this, and he bought one immediately (he is more serious about coffee than bees).
it was invented by the same guy that invented the aerobee (the ring shaped frisbee that flys forever), and it is lexan (and travels well)...we have 2 and i usually travel with one. filters are cheap...highly recommended from a true caffeine addict.
