New Beekeeper

Gday folks,
With my lovely partner  we have just started to beekeep.  Our son is keen to get involved too.
We live in Mount Airy Georgia.
We got a hive and bees yesterday and they are out in the backyard near the blackberries.  I went back at lunchtime today and they were merrily whizzing in and out.  A local beekeeper helped us out by putting 5 frames in our hive from a nuc.  Is very very new at this.  

is glad to be here and is going to go do some searching and browsing to see what i can find.

Ive come a long way from when i was a kid in Australia (was born and raised in Australia, lived in Japan then moved to USA in 1997, have been in georgia just barely a year and love it).  when i went out with my buddies and learnt from a local aboriginal tribe how to smoke bees in eucalyptus trees to get their honey.

I also have some herbs and vegetables, chickens and soon rabbits. I live on a 2 1/2 acre property with a creek nearby. No neighbours on two sides only fields. so its nice.

I'm also in Georgia..... central area. Where abouts are you in Georgia? I saw what town, but don't have a clue as to where that is.

Down were I'm at, we rarely get snow. That makes it really easy to keep bees all year. I actually feel that Georgia is one of the nicest places to have bees - lots of lush plants, several varities of flowering trees, and good weather.

I know that such a world traveler must have seen some interesting and even strange things - I wonder if your mind had always had interest in beekeeping and if you have seen many different hive configurations?

We have several Philippine members who have very interesting LOG HIVES and I've seen many (well a few anyways) members in the states start with cut sections of trees and move the hives into standard boxes, where as in the Philippines they raise them in these really cool split hives.

Any way Glad you found the forums, I know when either using the search feature or asking all of us live in the forums or chat, you will have a GREAT RESOURCE here to work from and I know it will help make a better beekeeper out of you then if you had never found the forums. We are ALL better at this hobby, whether we are just learning about bees for the first time or have been raising them for decades - all of us learn from others triumps and mistakes and they are both VERY powerful tools that none of us are scared to share.
