living pretty well on our dime.  ugh.

Sacrifice is something that many Americans are becoming all too familiar with during this economic downturn. It was a key theme in President Obama's inaugural address to the nation, and he's referenced it numerous times when lecturing the country on how to get back on its feet.

But while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing  summer sojourns - or forgoing them altogether - the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice. While many of us are struggling, the First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her "closest friends." According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms, more than a third of the lodgings at the 160-room resort. Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times.

Reports are calling the lodgings of  Obama's Spanish fiesta, the Hotel Villa Padierna in Marbella, "luxurious," "posh" and "a millionaires' playground." Estimated room rate per night? Up to a staggering $2,500. Method of transportation? Air Force Two.

To be clear, what the Obamas do with their money is one thing; what they do with ours is another. Transporting and housing the estimated 70 Secret Service agents who will flank the material girl will cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

Perhaps it could be that the Obamas, who seem to fancy themselves more along the lines of international celebrities than actual leaders, espouse a different view of sacrifice. When Michelle Obama accompanied her husband to Copenhagen along with best buddy Oprah Winfrey, she billed the trip - an ultimately unsuccessful bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago - as follows: "As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the President to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."

A quick jaunt to Denmark is a sacrifice? What portraits in courage!

The Obama modus operandi is becoming clear. From lavish trips to Spain to reportedly flying Bo, the President's Portuguese water dog, on a separate aircraft to vacation with them in Maine, to a date night in New York City that perhaps cost nearly $100,000, their idea of austerity is really just the lap of luxury, at least for ordinary folks.

Incredibly, the Obamas have long portrayed themselves as precisely such commoners. Just this month, Obama told ABC the First Couple is "not that far removed from what most Americans are going through." And that "it was just a few years ago that we had high credit card balances, we had two kids, thinking about college. We had our own retirement accounts, wondering if we were going to be able to get enough assets in there."

but hey, we only have to pay for part of it.  how bad can it be?????
.....The greatest changes occur in their country without their cooperation. They are not even aware of precisely what has taken place. They suspect it; they have heard of the event by chance. More than that, they are unconcerned with the fortunes of their village, the safety of their streets, the fate of their church and its vestry. They think that such things have nothing to do with them, that they belong to a powerful stranger called “the government.” They enjoy these goods as tenants, without a sense of ownership, and never give a thought to how they might be improved.....

But look at it as more stimulus spending.  They are helping to save jobs.  That hotel may have been hurting real bad with people not being to pay that kind of money for a room.

Well, if they don't have jobs over there, then they might have to come over here and get a monthly check from the government here.

refresh my memory.  during the early years of the bush admin, there was a recession which he INHERITED...big deal. that happens, but.....

i don't remember Barbara and the girls jetting off to ? for holiday, at tax payer expense, with 60 or so of their closest friends?  i don't begrudge the family their holiday, although i think they should pay for it.  it's how it looks to the average American who's probably putting off their vacation, or scaling it back, because they don't have the  money or just don't have the confidence to spend the money.

seems to me that if nothing else,  the obama team needs new PR  managers.  it would be to much to ask that elitists consider the people they 'serve'.

When Barack & Michelle walk out of the White House for the last time ( hope that happens sooner than later ) they'll wave to the cameras and say " So Long Suckers, Thanks for the Sweet Ride and Hospitality "

You see, that Hope & Change thing was just for the Obamas.

nice article.  makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.  guess the earlier article that said she'd made the trip to comfort a grieving friend didn't wash.  after all, there is Hallmark......

Ok--I completely and totally give up. When faced with the possibility that the trip was paid from their own pocket instead of being an outrageous taxpayer expense, now you're criticizing whether she was there to visit a grieving friend or not? Seriously?

Maybe I'm short on sleep, but this double standard is really getting under my skin. I guess Newsweek is now a completely unreliable media also, unless--of course--they happen to report that the Obamas are lying, thieving, conniving, lawbreaking, elitist, tax-evading sons of guns.

Newsweek went left years ago.  they are not a reliable source of unbiased news. could be why their readership went so far in the dumper and they were just sold.

lets say that Michelle paid all her own room, food, shopping expenses,  etc.  i'm actually sure she probably did.  WE paid for the plane, security, armored cars, etc.  in addition, that money that she spent, and that was spent by those with her, went into the economy of a foreign country.  bill and hill did the same thing, but they didn't do it with a crashing economy and high unemployment at home.
pretty hard to convince people that you feel their pain when you are doing stuff like this.  it's all about perception and being completely tone deaf.  all she did was re-enforce what many already think about her, and about them.  they are elitists.

NO NO NO!! They would NEVER have anything to do with guns!!!!!   :sheeple:

:)

There's always a double standard.  Sure, Bush did some of the same things that Obama's doing, and we didn't jump all over him.  But somebody sure did!!

This time there's the same double standard...only this time most of the established media has been standing up for the current president while the granulated people of the right are going after him, and last time it was the established media going after the president while the granulated right were trying to stick up for him....

(i define established media as the television networks, magazines, newspapers, not including radio and some exceptions, your definition may differ from mine and that is fine, I'll accept that that may be the case)
