I like doing cut-outs, but I love catching swarms!

This was a really nice colony but they were in a wall void below an electrical box that made the job a little messy. The bees filled a deep and a medium. Didn't use the bee vac, just used my hand to transfer the bees. Besides it was very hot out and I knew there would be casualties with the vac.

As usual JP you never fail to impress.  Those people in LA don't know how lucky they are... how many hives do you have in your apiary now? I mean this year alone looks like you have brought in over 30 cutouts and swarms..

Love the video.   3 or 4 stings?   Where was the smoker?   Still love your videos greatly.

The smoker was outside the door. Every now and then if they misbehaved I'd give them a puff, which was about three times.

Lord, I believe I've lost count on the hives. Last I did an inventory check around 65.

As JP has found out, don't get into cutouts and let it be known, if you don't really. really, really, really, want to get into cutouts. Once your name gets out, you will be inundated.   cheesy   cheesy

no kidding!  smiley

don't know about JP and iddee, but i don't smoke a cutout if i can help it.  it seems to make the queen harder to find.  at least that's my impression.  most of the time, the cutout hive seem to be pretty calm as long as you work them slowly and let them settle from time to time.  the worst of it seems to be with the initial opening of the hive.  of course, i don't have to worry about things like AHB up here.

I use my smoker on almost every cut out, to calm them, keep them at bay or to move them. Today I used the smoker for all three purposes. Most times you don't need the smoker at the very end and that's usually when queens are discovered, if there's only one.

If I use the bee vac and have to shake bees in the set up and move them that night, you really need the smoker to get them in when closing up the box/boxes.

Usually the smoker is not needed on very new colonies or swarms unless closing them up you need to get them in.

I use smoke upon opening the void. As Cathy said, they are normally calm after the first intrusion. I use bee-quick to herd them away from an area.

Great video JP, we were in your neck of the woods friday on the way through to Texas, stopped in the French Quarter for beignets and au lait at Cafe DuMonde. I didn't notify since we were there for only a couple hours of tourism and then on the way again.

Hope you enjoyed your short stint here, Annette popped in over here about a week ago or so and I was able to visit with her for a short while. She gave me a red umbrella but I don't think its "The red umbrella".

Isn't that coffee and beignets so good?

As JP said, my hubby and I were over there recently. Liz, JP's wife took us out to the Cafe DuMonde and we pigged out on several of those delicious beignets with the special coffee. What fun that was.

You should have called JP as even a short visit would have been worth it for you both.

I was telling my wife while we were there that it would have been good to have a little more time to stop by and see JP's yard. even considered buying some bees on the way back (we don't need more bees). But the drive from Austin Tx to Chipley Fl. is about 14 hours. Next time we go, we're gonna leave earlier and have more time to spend around New Orleans, and if JP is up for it; a visit to his yards.
