New goats

Had someone deliver two new white angora does to me this afternoon. I have kept an angora before and wanted to get them again. The lady who sold them gave me quite the deal as she is ill and can't keep them as she used to. They are yound (2nd year) and both proven this spring. Great coats on them now. I'll probably try to breed them with a pygmy buck this fall to get pygoras in the spring and then begin my shearing again. She originally wanted $75 apiece, but was so desperate was willing to go $50 for the pair. I feel like I got a great deal as my last angora was $100 by herself.

Sounds good, I have 2 tongenburg does with the angora affect, long coats on the hind quarters.  I've been thinking of combing them out every so often but don't know anyone who would be interested in the hair.  I also have 3 sheep now with more due before spring, I must convince 1 of my daughters to learn to spin wool into yarn.  Then I can make use of both the goats and sheeps hair and wool.

Brian, you get a goat with good mohair you don't even need to spin it to sell it. If you wash it, card it, and dye it you can sell it to doll makers for a bundle. Put "mohair+doll" or something similar into eBay and see what you get. If I remember correctly a half oz of properly cleaned, carded and dyed mohair will go for $20 or so. Then think that there are 32 of those half oz packets in a pound. Then think of how many pounds come off of each goat. Then think that you shear them twice per year.

I was also thinking of learning to spin also. I wouldn't mind learning how and eventually knitting a scarf or two or something. I like the idea of creating something like that from start (mohair still on the beast) to finish (mohair on a two-legged beast).

Color me green What is with everyone else getting goats but me??? I really wish I had the room and nicer neighbors but the chickens and the bees have already pushed them to their limits.
