I was just reading that the MJ memorial cost the city of LA 1.4 mil.
Initially I figured that the family or the MJ estate should kick in for the cost, however after reading how the local goverment completely screwed up I sure as heck would not expect anyone other than the city to pay for their own screw ups.
Here are a few examples, I am sure more will follow.
After spending most of the weekend telling folks that if you dont have a ticket dont show up they brought in 3200 police expecting 250,000 people to show, when only 1000 showed up they sent 1000 officers home early still leaving 2200 officers to manage them (all on overtime by the way)
They brought in lunches for the police from a restuarant 80 miles away for a cost of $49,000. A local sandwich shop could have provided lunch for about $17,000. Funny thing is when I work overtime my boss still expects me to pay for my own lunch ?
The city set up a website asking for fans to donate to the cost, so far $17,000 has been donated but they are having technical troubles, by the time they get it fixed people will have moved on to the next big news item.
I am all for paying legitimate expenses but goverment excess should come out of their own budgets.

i agree. bad decisions need to be paid for by those who make bad decision.
don't know the LA policy for making special events pay for extra police. some places do that, some don't. i don't think taxpayers should be paying for lunch when there is a micky d's on every corner and lunch can be had for a few bucks.

When will he die?  Now you do know that funeral processions are escorted by police so they can stop traffic. Who pays for that? Is it included on the funeral cost? When I die I am going to donate my body to something, perhaps a body farm.... look it up if you don't know what it is.... and instruct everyone to have a party. I wouldn't want to hold up the lives of the living after I am gone. |

There is a body farm here in Knoxville at the University of TN, not sure but I think it was the first one. It was set up by the world renowned Dr. Bass who just retired a couple of years ago. It is located up on a hillside behind the UT Hospital.

Id expect like here, the govt will roll out the figure for "economic benefit, tourism exposure, media exposure" etc at about 100 million and say that the cost to the city is well spent. Spindoctors.

I may be wrong but I've read somewhere that back in the 1980s the IRS seized a brothel in Nevada for back taxes. The government claimed the owner was making money hand over fist and wasn't reporting it.
Because it was "making money" the government appointed a manager to run the place until a buyer was found.
Well after a few years the books were deep in the red and no buyer was comming forward so they closed the place down.
If these folks can't make money from a brothel, what will they do to GM?

In the States that I've lived in, if you want a procession, you pay. Usually the funeral home/mortuary handles it and it's included in their bill. |

I heard from the Council Woman (acting Mayor) of L.A. she said that the city has allocated special funds for police related events, sport team victory parades, etc, set aside in their funding. This money was supposed to be used, if it broke their bank or not, I don't know.
But I sit here trying to thing of anyone else with equal worldwide known fame and cannot think of anyone who has impacted so many generations (at least decades) as an entertainer to MJ's extent.
I'm not saying it is right or wrong, it is just given that I didn't see protesters in the street booing the celebration of MJ's life, I guess to the fruits and nuts of Hollywood, it is a goodbye that they felt comfortable celebrating.
