Real Bummer tonite...Snakebit dog
« on: July 05, 2009, 10:18:53 PM »
George, the newest dog to move in, just got snakebit by a rattler...Janelle just carried him into the house telling me to look at him, and I found 2 fang marks, one on his lip and one in his nose.....Hes just a little yellow dog but he is BooBoos best friend...He never leaves BooBoos side....Thats what was wierd,....he came into Janelles studio acting wierd, without BooBoo.
WEll, anyways, he might live...or he might die...At the moment tho he's still breathing..The first 8 hours are the most important the internet says, and the vets wife next door says pretty much all I can do is give George benadryl and wait it out. I'm not freakin out like I have with other dogs getting hurt but its still a lousy thing to happen to such a good little fella.
Ijust told you guys cuz i didnt know what else to do....I also took a picture of George sleeping, just in case he dies. I prayed for him too already.
 Anyways, thats all....
If you look at his snout you can see where he got bit.
your friend,
john

I hope the poor feller get better John. I had hunting dogs some got snake bit hunting in the swamps for coons. I never had one to die. Folklore around the swamp was that dogs that have dewclaws are immune to snakebite.
Do let us know of his progress.......John

Poor feller kinda looks like he will pull through though not much swelling.  Dogs are pretty dang good about getting over that stuff.  I've pulled 4 dogs through copperhead bites which thank goodness aren't as bad.  I hope ya dog pulls through though keep us posted about the progress.  I'm sure got alot of dog lovers on here like myself.

John I am so sorry to hear about the little guy, he is a cute one.
I will say a prayer for him, St. Francis is the patron saint of animals so he may be watching over him.
Around here the biggest thing to worry about with our dogs are them getting ticks or hit by a car although some areas are starting to have trouble with coyotes.
Snakes, geez thats rough.

He's in my prayers too.

Will his nostrils swell shut? If he has trouble breathing through his nose, you might set something between his teeth, to prop his mouth open...

I just saw 2 rattlesnakes this week on the road.  Have to be careful around them.

I am sending a prayer for your doggy John.

Sincerely
annette

Thats terrible news. I woke up a few months ago to find a partially eaten copperhead on the back doorstep. Luckily neither dog showed signs of being bitten.

I will be thinking of you and the dog.

My FIL had one of his dogs bitten by a copper head or rattler several years ago, he came through physicaly OK but was not right mentaly. Just never did act right after that, not mean or anything like that just acted kind of "retarded" for lack of a better word.

Hope he comes through it OK.

Hey you guys!!!
George is good today!, Maybe a little slow but this morning he busted out the door with all the other dogs to check out the world!
His head is still swollen...makes him look puppyish. and his throat, underneath is real swollen and saggy.
I really thot he was a goner last nite, but right after I posted the story, I turned around to look at him and he had his head up a little kinda lolling it around.
Thanks all you guys for your concern and prayers! Im sure George appreciates them all too!
Never a dull moment around here it seems! thanks again!
your friend,
john( and George!)

great news.  thanks for the update.
.....The greatest changes occur in their country without their cooperation. They are not even aware of precisely what has taken place. They suspect it; they have heard of the event by chance. More than that, they are unconcerned with the fortunes of their village, the safety of their streets, the fate of their church and its vestry. They think that such things have nothing to do with them, that they belong to a powerful stranger called “the government.” They enjoy these goods as tenants, without a sense of ownership, and never give a thought to how they might be improved.....

GREAT news!!!  Hey, he isn't a staffie, or staffie mix is he?  He looks like he could be, but maybe it is the swelling.  Anyway, glad to hear the update!
