Imo, it's not smoking, drinking, eating, and being merry that's going to kill us in the future. It's government regulation.

I'm a liberty-minded person, with the basis that your and my freedoms don't cause harm to others, and one of my favorite older sci-fi movies was "Demolition Man", even if Stallone is not Oscar material. Wink
For any of you who didn't see it (probably the majority here) it's a futuristic movie in which society has deemed anything that is not good for you is illegal. It's chock full of humor and has some really silly moments, but has an underlying theme that appeals to the love of liberty. I personally think it should be required viewing for everyone over 12 years of age. Wink

Anyway, new legislation has been overwhelmingly passed in the Senate to give more power to the FDA for tobacco regulation.  What's interesting about it is that Phillip Morris is supporting it, and I have to wonder what their motive is. I would bet there is money at stake somewhere in there.

excerpt from article:

Quote
The tobacco lobby, contended Durbin, has long been the most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill, "and they managed to create an exemption in virtually every law so that no federal agency could take a look at them and regulate them."
But the industry has also taken hits in recent years as the dangers of smoking became more apparent and states moved to limit smoking in public places. In 1998 the industry agreed to pay the states $206 billion to help cover health care costs, and this year Congress raised the federal cigarette tax by 62 cents, to $1.01 a pack, to fund a health care program for children.
The nation's largest tobacco manufacturer, Philip Morris, USA, has come out in support of the legislation. Its parent company, Altria Group, said in a statement that on balance, "the legislation is an important step forward to achieve the goal we share with others to provide federal regulation of tobacco products."
Its main rivals, however, have voiced opposition, arguing in part that FDA restrictions on new products will lock in Philip Morris' share of the market.
Lawmakers portrayed the bill as a major first step in bringing down health care costs, an essential goal of the health care overhaul legislation that is the top priority of the Obama administration this year.

It is leading to the social health care. They will soon be like that movie, only it won't be Taco Bell  grin , They will regulate your diet, your exercise, the amount of sleep you get and the work you do. Probably will have one TV station and it will dictate what you watch.

Study up on the old commercial jingles.  Undecided

If memory serves, there were a series of fairly funny movies made back when the Brits nationalised their health care system.
Made fun of the Doctor Union strikes, Nurse strikes, patients waiting forever, and so on.
Hope we live long enough to laugh at what's comming down the pike at us.

i'm thinking we can expect more of this.  if they are successful in getting  a taxpayer funded health care program, they will regulate many things that they consider bad for you.  it will be done in the name of the taxpayer, to keep costs down.

look at what they have done with the banks and auto companies.  if they got govt money, they are now under govt control.  if we get govt health care, they will begin to control or behaviors....more than they already do......

so, think about your favorite fattening food, your favorite risky hobby, the kind of car that you drive, and the way spend your recreation time.  all can be regulated "for the greater good" of the taxpayers.

Exactly. That's the scariest thing (imo) about this rampant government takeover of private business.

Reminds me of great quote:
If you judge safety to be the paramount consideration in life, you should avoid at all costs such foolhardy activities as driving, falling in love, or inhaling air that is almost certainly riddled with deadly germs. Never cross an intersection against a red light, even when you can see that all roads are clear for miles. And never, of course, explore the guts of an idea that seems as if it might threaten one of your more cherished beliefs. In your wisdom, you will probably live to a ripe old age.

But you may discover, just before you die, that you have been dead for a long, long time.

Earlier today, my husband was talking with a young woman he works with. She's a pretty smart young woman who sees what is going on in our country in the same light most of us here do, but she says many young people in her age group think that socialism is "cool". That really alarms me. They have no idea what they are talking about, and by the time they do, it may be too late to do anything about it.
