joie ,don't be concerned about looking at the boxes too much.On good days I make several trips to my hives to see if they are coming and going . It's all in being a good beek. I do recommend that you not open the hive very often unless you are fairly sure there is a problem. My opinion if you pull frames too often you disturb their work. Take that as my opinion as others may have a diff. view. In the winter, I don't like to open my hives while they are clustered so I use a stephoscope to listen in as to their well being. In Louisiana during winter we may have a day of freezing or below and a couple days later it could be 75 or so.
I am glad you are all set to begin you experience with beekeeping. There is a lot of info. on the net however, my wife and I bought and read Beekeeping for Dummies, at Books a Million by Howard Blankston .
