9 frames vs 10 frames
«

Hi all,
I was recently in Washington State and spoke with a beekeeper out there. As we went into his hives I noticed that he was using 9 frames in a Langstroth hive. Upon closer inspection I saw that the hive was much cleaner than my 10 frame. I've looked every where for the spacing dimension so I could make a cheater to help with the spacing.
I've seen tools for sale but at $20 each, I bet I can make something better for less...and if the 9 frame idea doesn't fly with my Connecticut be i'm out nothing but time! Anyone here got a tip or hint. Even a push in the right direction would be helpful.
Thanks
Will Banks

How does a 9 frame hive help keep a cleaner hive than a 10 frame??

just use your thumb or finger as a space between each frame. you dont have to make or buy it and i hope you dont loose it.

In my experience nine frames in a ten frame box results in less brood that can be covered, more uneven comb which causes more rolling of bees, and larger cell size.
