Painting (time) Hives

I was asked a question today from a new fixing to be beekeeper, he asked (my packages are coming in 7 days and i havent painted my hives yet, how long does a painted hive have to sit after he paints it before he can put his bee's in the hive), I'm not sure of this question so any help would be appreciated.

Unless your using cresote or something similar,  assuming your only painting the outside, just wait long enough for it to dry so it can be handled.

I have known some folks that repaint their hives with the bees in them.

yeah in 24hr it will be totaly dri but in 3-4 hr it will dry to the point you can handle them with no problem.

I use glidden ser. weather paint 3 coats 1 every 45 min to a hr let them set over night then stack them up.

Me too! That's why I'm doing the long drive to Ohio to get mine--I want to see a working, large apiary, and I don't want my girls having to go through the mail I want to bond with them right away!

My water based (latex) paint claims to be touch dry in 30 minutes, have a recoat time of 2 hours, and a completely dry time of 24 hours. This is depending on weather though, and I find the paint still a little soft after 24 hours. After 3 or 4 days though they are fine.
