The Second Amendment is about the Right to Self-defense and Self-protection. It's not just about deer rifles or the sport of hunting.
The author of this little piece covers it very well...
Why I Carry a Gun.
My old grandpa said to me, "Son, there comes a time in every man's life when he stops bustin' knuckles and starts bustin' caps and usually it's when he becomes too old to take an ass whoopin'." I don't carry a gun to kill people. I carry a gun to keep from being killed. I don't carry a gun to scare people. I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place. I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid.. I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world. I don't carry a gun because I'm evil. I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world. I don't carry a gun because I hate the government.. I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government. I don't carry a gun because I'm angry. I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared. I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone. I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon. I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man. I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love. I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate. I carry a gun because unarmed and facing three armed thugs, I am inadequate. I don't carry a gun because I love it.. I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me." Police Protection" is an oxymoron. Free citizens must protect themselves. Police do not protect you FROM Crime; They investigate the crime AFTER it happens. And then try to clean up the mess. Personally, I carry a gun because I'm too young to die and too old to take an ass whoopin'."..author unknown (but obviously brilliant)
Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes. The Average response time of a .45 ACP is 850 Feet Per Second.

Johnny, that is a beautiful quote. It's too bad we lost our independence a few decades back. This country would be a much better place if the people had heeded those words.

Two of my favorite gun quotes:
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this give moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion of your walks. Thomas Jefferson
Fireams stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence... From the hour the pilgrims landed, to the present day events, occurrences and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensible... The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference - they deserve a place of honor with all that's good. George Washington.

Speakin' of guns......I went to Walmart to but a 10/22 a couple days ago( mostly to dress up and make look cool...perhaps shoot someo...I mean something) I got declined from being able to make the purchase!!! I havent even been convicted of a felony! The guy at the counter, when asked if this occurs often, he said" All the time."...Someone must know something I dont know...or remember...He asked me if I had ever been declined, and i told him I hadnt bought a gun in over 25 years! I wasnt really mad tho, but I did wanna get one before they cant be gotten any more. Maybe walmart will call me back to tell me I'm ok to get it.

they run a very superficial local, state, and federal check. your name may have popped up for any number of reasons, including your name being close to or the same as someone elses name. best thing to do is call your local sheriff if he/she is the helpful type. tell them what happened and see if they can run your name and at least tell you what came up. some will do it, some won't. if it's a simple mistake, you can probably fix it and get your gun. if it's something else, better to know now....

Ketchup and mustard on the front of your shirt huh, if this was a few weeks ago you could have showed them what was under your shirt. Oh its too bad you don't still have your hernia, you could have threatened to show it to the guy, that thing was like a concealed weapon, my eyes my eyes. Give me what I want or I'm showing you my belly button. Now you have to find out why they didn't give it to you, we all want to know. Maybe you had some sordid secret past that we don't know about and that you just want to forget about.... Tell us friend, what have you done? We won't tell

Delayed or Declined ? I get delayed every time I try to buy a new gun and I've got permits to carry in three different states. I've had those permits since the early 80's and I can assure you my past is clean as a whistle. It happens sometimes and if you got delayed I'd urge you to pursue this and get your 10/22 while "The Great One" will still allow you to do so.

You hit it on the head Chopper! I emailed ATF with my situation...they said they needed a NICS #....Told me to get that from walmart...I called walmart and told the lady about what I needed for the ATF because I was declined....She told me that I wasnt declined and that the other salesman was wrong about me being declined,...She said, just like you mentioned woodchopper..I was delayed, not declined, and I will probably get a call later. Id'a called the sherriffs dept, but I called a friend at the police dept....He couldnt help me as it was ATF stuff and he couldnt get into their business. I figure everything should work out. As long as the gun is still there, I'll be cool. Guns arent a big part of my life, but the way things are now I think its a good idea to get 'em while the gettins' good!

it is kind of an ATF thing, but the checks are usually run through another agency. for instance, ours checks are run from the sheriffs through the state and depending on what you are trying to do, the FBI. so local can at least tell you what hangs things up, but maybe your police have a policy that won't let them do that. walmart and other dealers can't do that for you. all they can do is sell or not.

Mr Bigfish, you think you got it bad; there is a felon in Mich. with my exact name, birthdate, and description. I finally got a concelled weapons permit and no longer have problems. Everytime I wanted to by a handgun I had to get finger printed by police and then they would delay, delay and delay. I finally told the sheriff I'm coming down there and I either want my permit to purchase or to be arrested for trying to get a permit illegally. In N.C. you get a permit to purchase from the sheriff before you buy. He thought I was just being a smart a--, but I got the permit.

Don't wait for the phone call John. When you get delayed the ATF or whoever delayed you has one week to stop the sale. If Wal-Mart or your local gun shop doesn't hear anything from them within that time you are 100% legal to buy that firearm. Make sure you buy plenty of ammo for it when you pick it up because ammo is getting real scarce these days. Glad I reload.

Thanks for that tidbit of information 'Chopper. I think Friday is my week of waiting...maybe even tomorrow or Thursday. The ammo....Thats why I went with the 22 instead of an AK or something similar. I remember reading a while back that most people killed in our country are from 22 hits...Sure surprised me! And, speakinb of ammo...There were a couple of Pauls friends sighting their rifles in on last Sunday....300 mm or something like that( they are fixing to go to Africa to kill something. At any rate, I sked how much the shells cost, just out of curiosity.....$89.00 for 20 rounds, before tax! Oh yeh, Chopper....Have you got a link on the one week ATF deal so I can wave it under the Walmarts guys nose? That would sure help my case if i dont hear anything! Thanks again!

Even .22 ammo is gettting hard to find and more expensive. Think I've read the 10/22 will preform well with pretty much anything you feed it. Although more expensive the CCI 100 packs sold at Wal-Mart are much cleaner and consistent than the value packs. I buy alot of both......just because. I'll do a search at a couple of the gun forums I'm on tomorrow and try to dig up that law for you regarding being delayed. For the record even gun shops sometimes don't call you back when you are allowed to buy a gun after being delayed. Most of them are pretty busy these days because of the fear of the AWB being renewed.

Oh yeh, Chopper....Have you got a link on the one week ATF deal so I can wave it under the Walmarts guys nose? That would sure help my case if i dont hear anything! Thanks again! Here you go : http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#p34(P34) Will NICS provide an instant response? [Back] NICS will not always provide an instant response. Licensees will receive either a “proceed”, “denied”, “delayed”, or “cancelled” response from NICS. If a “proceed” response is received, the transfer may proceed. If a “denied” response is received, the transfer may not proceed. If a “delayed” response is received, the transfer must be delayed until a “proceed” response is received from NICS or until the lapse of 3 business days, whichever occurs first. Of course, the licensee must still comply with any waiting period requirements under State law. See Question P29 for a discussion of cancelled transactions. (P35) For purposes of the Brady law, what is meant by a “business day?” [Back] A business day is defined as any day on which State offices are open. (P36) If a licensee contacts NICS on Thursday, December 2, and gets a “delayed” response, when may the licensee transfer the firearm if no further response is received from NICS? [Back] The firearm may be transferred on Wednesday, December 8. Assuming State offices are open on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday, and closed on Saturday and Sunday, 3 business days would have elapsed at the end of Tuesday, December 7. Therefore, the licensee may transfer the firearm at the start of business on Wednesday, December 8. The 3 business days do not include the day the NICS check is initiated. Hope this explains everything for you John.
