I've tried it and it works for the bees, but I do not like it because you really have to be careful pulling the first frame out when doing an inspection, it is very easy to roll or squash the bees. You must pull the first frame out VERY, VERY slowly.

If you are a newbie, I believe I would get a little experience before trying to modify things that are proven to work.

You'll be swamped just learning the regular stuff, if you can call anything in beekeeping regular.

Join your local beekeepers club, and get local advice !

The problem of rolling bees is only worse with wider spacing as the combs get more uneven and more bees get caught on the protrusions.  If rolling is an issue for you, then make some follower boards and put one on the North or West side and, if there is still space on the other side.  It will give you a smooth surface to pull out that has no bees attached to any great amount.

I am trying it, but it is too soon to tell. I am also trying out using only starter strips. My 3# package was installed on 13 April. So, I only have 5-6 frames being worked on at the moment. They aren't all the way filled out. I will let you know when there is more to report.

I use 11 per box with no major problems.  It can get pretty tight in the boxes if the frame end bars have propolis build-up or you have a warped frame in the mix.

I am trying starter strips also for natural cell size.
