Hi everyone:

Here is a link to a VERY SHORT segment that aired on National Public Radio from the interview I did several months ago http://www.wnyc.org/stream/ram.py?file=/radiolab/radiolab021805.ra
The show isn't about beekeeping but about ants, so the content is only about 2 minutes long, the longer broadcast segments airtimes have not been announced yet.

If you just want to hear my 120 seconds of rambling - start at roughly 24:00 of the broadcast - I'll save the plot line of this simple tale for suspence purposes, but if you list to the entire program (or at least 5 or 6 minutes prior) you will see how my short tale fits in.

I'll keep everyone updated when I get more broadcast dates and times Smiley Turn it up for the voice of Laura in the background!

darn real audio
I hate that prog. full of spyware very intrusive.
I have to look for Real Alternative a free prog that will let you listen without having to have Real Audio.

Yeah Rog... Glad I didn't tell a "pop a pimple story" or they would have chosen that instead - ugh.  Glad I don't have any "How I set my hives on fire" stories - lol.

That show is interesting though - they aquaint it to Quantum Leap and it is a pretty neat concept: I've listened to several episodes of it and covers some heavy topics and gets trippy at times, which is pretty sweet too  shocked

It does blow me away though that nearly four hours of material and THAT made the first cut - lol. All that "FINE digital footage" laying on the floor of cyberspace - whoduh thunkit.

If Laura gets paid by the "seconds" of airtime - she hasn't covered BUS FARE yet.

More to come - I promise. Let's see if they can AIR me getting STUNG again while their at it  rolleyes

It was a real pleasure to listen to. Smiley Since Roger is the only one to have met you (and you two may be the only ones on the forum to have met, right?)....... anyway, it gives the rest of us a more complete picture of our Mr. Beemaster.

That was some story you told. LOL That was pretty sad.

John -

Great story with a tragic ending for the queen.   cry   It was a window into getting to know more about the Beemaster.  I loved hearing Laura in the background  "gasp" at the sight.   Great work!

You sound younger on the radio than I imagined.

Some people tell me I have a voice and a face for radio!   huh

Rog,

Thanks for the link to the player. I don't like Real Audio either, so this was a welcome addition.

What's wrong with RealPlayer??? That's all I ever use anymore. I like the layout and all the librarys that it has.

As BETH'S "younger" (Beth says - YOU WISH) brother in the forum - I take my young sounding vioce as a compliment. That was all unedited, I was pushing about 10 bees off my hands, grabbing a middle frame and sure enough the queen was there.

The part AFTER I got stung was about detailing the size, color differences of workers and the queen - it was pretty cool, I hope that part gets aired someday. Followed by pointing out swarm and supercedure cells (there weren''t any luckily in November) but I showed her where they would be on the frames and we talked about feral hive comb.

Lots of good material - but it has to fit into the shows topics, Radio Lab covers a common theme each show, but uses several approaches to prove their theories and the SWARM SHOW will be either going in with a migration show or a population theme show it seems like now. Either way or any way, I think we will see about a 20 minute segment interlaced with the shows theme of that week.

I think the Migration and/or population theme is interesting - it is by far the poorest example of migration but it does concern population very well. But Radio Lab could easily put Bee Swarming and the current land wars on the West Bank together and toss in a 6 year old chess master all in the same show. Whacky, but it works.

So it gets down to when can they put a complete collection of examples together to show the common theme: that is what I'm waiting to see too, it should be interesting. We talked about the tossing of the drones, swarming, queens pheromone control over the hive, smoker effects and most covered was the SOCIAL ORDER of the hive: the who does what when stuff of the bee hive and how queen scent aids that whole hive mentality and survivability.

I'll keep everyone informed of course Smiley
