They eat coconuts for a living! How would you like to be on an island and come across a crab that is more than 3 feet from head to tail and weighs up to 40 pounds, with a pair of large pincers strong enough to open coconuts! They can climb trees too, but they only eat coconuts that have already fallen to the ground. Coconut crab meat has been considered a local delicacy. ...JP

But no, the crab is holding onto a stick, and there is a bit of perspective photography going on. As with most of the other pictures, although thats still one big crab. |

Yep, the crab is hanging from a stick. My guess John is that they make no noise, except when they're cracking open coconuts!

Its standard practice to capture them and feed them actual coconut for up to 3 months in order to purge their system of dead.. well whatever. It is fantastic though. I was stationed in Guam for 2 years 2000-2002 and they used to cross my yard heading for the jungle. Good stuff thanks for taking me back I loved it there.  |
