anyone tapping trees?  Sap was running good last weekend but winter is back now.

We did. Tapped a couple big ones that are on the edge of the property. We got about 4 gallons of sap, boiled it down to almost nothin, but it did taste good on the french toast. It never got "syrup-y" more like brown water....lol Then proceeded to spill it in the fridge.....sticky!!! nearly ripped the wrapper off the cheese...hahaha  I don't know. I'm kinda dissapointed that it didn't turn out more like actual syrup, but we're rookies  grin

dumb southern question but, do you just jam a pipe into the tree and the sap flow out?

you drill a 7/16 hole at a slight angle up about 3" deep.  I have taps that I bought about .25ea.  Hang a bucket from them and on days that it freezes at night then jumps to the 40s or 50 they will drip continuely.  I tapped 6 trees for 3 days and got about 50gals on sap.  This boiled down made alittle more that 1 gal

And you only use the sap from sugar maples or can you get other kinds from different trees?

Danno, I've heard it takes an awful lot to produce syrup once boiled down but is that the norm, 50 gallons= 1 gallon of syrup once boiled down?

The perfect sweet potato is one dressed in butter and seasoning to your liking then drizzled in maple syrup. Eat it with a pan seared pok chop, slowly cooked to keep it juicy.

Any maple can be tapped even box elder which is actually a maple but the sugar content is highest in sugar and black maples. About 2.5%     50 gals sap to 1 gal syrup is average for these 2 maples

How much will a tree normally provide? Can you store the sap until you get a lot and then reduce? I have one huge sugar maple in yard and no one has ever tapped it. Also, where did you get taps for 25cents? Love syrup, more than honey to be honest.

On a good day (cold night / warm day) I have taps that will fill a 6 gallon bucket.  It doesn't store well if it warm.  25 gallons at a time is all I usually do

Tried it just for fun...

Boiled down a gallon of sap, I got less than a cup of maple syrup.  It tastes like sweet syrup boiled with cardboard...  But homemade always is better!!

The bees sure do like those weeping trees!!

No I pull them and plug the holes with what is handy

Once it's done boiling, is there anything else to it?  Any other ingredients?

Just boiling until all the water is gone.  No other ingredients.   I use a digital thermometer when its getting close.  You watch the temp of the boil.  Sea level is 212Degs  The finished syrup will boil at 7 degs higher so at sealevel the boil is done at 219Deg

I have a couple hundred sugar maples but I only tapped 4 large ones.  Each tree gets at least 2 taps.  I only made a couple of gallons for family use.

Obviously not drinking fast enough or increase maple syrup production!

So where do you get taps? I think I gotta try this. I think I can find four big trees nexct year!

The taps or spiles as there called come in galvinized, stainless or plastic.  They are very cheap!!  Plastic are .40ea from this supplier.   I have the plastic ones that have a hose barb.  I connect 2 of them to a foot of tubing then into a tee fitting then a single 2 ft pc of tubing that extends to the ground.  I have 6 gallon buckets with a hole drilled in the lid that sits on the ground.  The lid keeps rain, bark and bird poop out
