About your dog
« on: February 14, 2009, 05:01:43 PM »
We are wondering if we have a weird dog. Out of three dogs only one seems to notice the red dot from a laser pointer. He will chase it all over the place.

We are wondering if there are other dogs that will do this. Anybody seen it?

He thinks he is a cat. I've never seen a cat that wouldn't chase it.

Yeah, your dog is weird!

As a side note, most dogs mirror their owners.   :-D

I have 3 dogs also. Two rat terriers and a chow. The male terrier notices shadows, flickers of light, and recently discovered the cursor arrow on the computer. The other two can care less.

I was just wondering, since dogs are suppose to only see in black and white, what this spot of red light must look like to him. Or does he have a vision defect and sees in color

I don't think weird quite captures the essence of my uniqueness.  :-D

My one cat Patches 26 pounds of fury will watch the animal channel, walk away during commercials and has a serious interest in hippos - since the HDTV he keeps back about 10 feet but sits up watching it without hardly blinking.

Only had two dogs and they were before I was out of my teens, but I know they could tell our car coming from a block or more away, even given I think MOST animals have a built in clock they go by.

According to my color blind friends red appears as white.  Sounds like you have to "normal" dogs and one suffering from ADHD.

The person I got my male from used to breed rat terriers. Before I even new my dog existed I would visit him now and again and during those visits he had about 4 terriers. He would tell them to go in their crate, he kept two to a crate.

One day he says, you know dogs aren't supposed to see colors right, explain this. He put colored dog bones out, 4 of them. Then, he would open the crates.

He said this dog will always go for the green ones, every time. I watched with my own eyes, that dog went for the green one every time. He put them out in different order to change things up a bit, but the dog would always go for the green one.

They know the smell of the green one. One of my chihuahuas likes the red morsels in the dry dog food and will dig them out and eat them first. He knows there is a red one still in there somewhere cause he can smell it. Then the dark brown ones. Then the rest when he gets hungry enough

Let me reiterate, the dogs were crated and the milkbones were put out 5' from the dogs. I watched the dog, I could swear he looked at the green one and ran to the green one. I see your point though, I know they have tremendous sniffers, but this was just weird.

The last thing I saw about dogs not being able to see color was,....well, Dogs do see color, but only the colors that humans see at twilite.
I kinda like the idea of animals seeing colors....But, then again, I like the idea of animals going to heaven too!

You block the view of the dogs. Place the various milkbones and cover them with a paper towel. One towel for each milkbone. Then turn the dogs loose. They will go for the green one if that is the one they like the most.

He thinks he is a cat. I've never seen a cat that wouldn't chase it.
I have two cats, two year old brothers.  We've got this laser light toy that spins the light all around.  One kitty plays with the light.  The other took one look at the spot on the floor, followed it back to the toy, and proceeded to give himself a bath.  He wasn't impressed
