a bird in hand is worth two in the bush

Until it deficates.

I prefer this version: "A bird in the pot is worth 6 on the wing."

I was just thinking about the title to this, "Used to be your word was as good as a handshake".

There are people that a handshake means nothing to them.
There are those to whom a signature on a contract doesn't mean much either. :(

But at least a written/signed contract is provable  :)

I had a really odd occurrence one time. I had given an estimate to the lady of the house and was called back to do the work approx a yr later. The paperwork required a signature and two areas initialed.

When asked to sign, it appeared as though she was signing but nothing was appearing on paper. I even checked the pen to make sure it never ran out of ink.

I asked her to sign, politely, 2 more times and to no avail.

I politely excused myself and went outside and called the husband at work.

He knew nothing of what was going on, was aware that I had been out the yr before, but had zero idea what deal his wife was working now.

It was at that time he told me she had been sick and her ailment made her do strange things.

He and I met a week later to do the work.
