But not anymore.
Yesterday I saw an ad for a table saw, emailed the guy and yes it was still available, called him to set up time to pick it up, two hours later get another email saying sorry it has sold  angry

Today I find an extractor for sale for $100, I call, get directions and set up a time to pick it up tomorrow, just one hour later I get an email from the person that they had somebody stop by to get some other stuff and had sold them the extractor as well  angry angry

Friday the 13th for sure.

Cash in hand is hard to pass up when you're trying to sell stuff. Sorry you missed out, keep trying, it'll happen.

Yeah but, not everybody is that way. It's a crying shame that "some" make us figure everyone is.

oldenglish, I agree with you. In my business we operate on a handshake. If I tell you that I will do something, you can take it to the bank. And......if I tell you that I am not going to do something, you can take that to the bank as well.

Old English, I hear on that, been burned a few times myself.  Usually if I call and talk to some one and the item(s) is still available I tell them I'll be by to pick it up and pay for it the next day.  I then go to get it only to find out the seller sold it to a person, several calls after mine, who could pick it up the same day as the add ran.

I mean I told them I'd take it, that, to me, means "SOLD."  Then to sell to someone else is breaking an oral sales contract.

I understand about keeping your word with someone, but if someone really needs the money, can you blame them if they sell to the first one with the cash? How do they know that you won't change your mind and stand them up?

No, I can't blame them, but they need to be honest up front. Don't say that you will hold it if you don't mean it.

I guess its true what they say..."money speaks louder than words" or something like that....Its sure hard to wait for somebody who may (or may not) show up when a guy is waiting with money in hand and a pickup to haul it away!

It really stinks though for you!  How disappointing!

I know your frustration and it is a shame on both sides of the coin. I don't know how many times I have held things for someone & then they never show or call or anything.  By that time you have already pulled the ad or told others interested that the item is gone & it's a pain to have to deal with it all over again.  J

I think I was more upset at missing out on a screaming deal, funny thing is the gal was selling the stuff for her dad. She was selling his hive boxes as well and had them up on two different sites, one for $10 each and another for $15.

I made up for it a little today, I picked up a table saw on a stand for only $40

I was just thinking about the title to this, "Used to be your word was as good as a handshake".

There are people that a handshake means nothing to them.

Until it deficates.

I prefer this version: "A bird in the pot is worth 6 on the wing."

There are those to whom a signature on a contract doesn't mean much either. Sad

But at least a written/signed contract is provable  Smiley

I had a really odd occurrence one time. I had given an estimate to the lady of the house and was called back to do the work approx a yr later. The paperwork required a signature and two areas initialed.

When asked to sign, it appeared as though she was signing but nothing was appearing on paper. I even checked the pen to make sure it never ran out of ink.

I asked her to sign, politely, 2 more times and to no avail.

I politely excused myself and went outside and called the husband at work.

He knew nothing of what was going on, was aware that I had been out the yr before, but had zero idea what deal his wife was working now.

It was at that time he told me she had been sick and her ailment made her do strange things.

He and I met a week later to do the work.
