This may be the first good sign this season in Massachusetts.
Well there was a flurry of activity a few times today at the observation hive. The temperature was in the low 50's and the sun was shining. I was sitting in my office and I could hear the roar of the bees again and I thought that they were doing their undertaking activities again. But I noticed that there were a lot more bees in the tube to the outside and they were all fanning their wings, and I could see by looking out the window that a few were taking flight - maybe cleansing flight! but with so many bees removed from the hive. I could clearly see the queen. Better yet, she was inspecting cells and then backing into them for a few seconds (as if to deposit an egg!) What else could she be doing? The workers were spread through out the hive. It was weird, they were dragging the dead to the top of the hive, maybe to get them away from the entrance and to a spot of little activity.
I can't see any eggs yet, the bees are covering most of cells and it's hard to see small eggs clearly through the glass. I know exactly where to look in a few days thought to see if there is any small larva. After the activity died down the bees came back from being spread through the hive to being in a tight cluster again. Now, they are mostly covering where I had seen the queen laying eggs. Maybe to keep the new eggs at 92 degrees?

I would love to have and observation hive in my room but my mom would flip, the school might have me build one in the bio 1 room though, so cool.

We had weather in the 70's for over a week and the queen started layin in the hives I cked. Then it fell to 7 degrees So the out has yet to bee seen. I have all ready started my hive on feed due to them eating most of there winter stores. Their useing a 1/2 gal or so every week.

Welcom, lively bees! Add your location to your profile and let us know what climate you are raising bees in. It's helpful for the rest of the membership to know what different people are doing in different climates so we can compare to what we are doing ourselves! I wish we had some of that 70 degree weather here! It's coooooollllllddd here. Our major warm ups here in the northeast mean the temps have risen above 20!  |

Sorry about that Im in east Tennessee We have had a vet mild winter so far. We have had only a few clod snaps but fot the most part it has been in the 40's 50's and 60's this winter. The norm is 20's 30's and 40's for this this time of year. Looks like we will have a bad bug problem this year.

HA HA  That's what happens when you work 50 hours a week, go to graduate school full time and try to work on your bee equipment on the weekends. Actually, I do work from the future, I was going to post about my time travel machine in the "Dark Side of the Moon" forum.  |
