Kathy, he looks very pretty, what color are his eyes? My cats sleep in the house, 3 on my side of the bed. 1 sleeps between my shoulder & neck. Funny but that one hates to be picked up during the day but sleeps as close to me as she can at night..prolly cause when asleep I can't "poke" her!  May be gross to some but I find the purring sooooo soothing & I never get sick. Most of the time they start purring in unison to my breathing we all go into sort of a Zen state. I'm gonna run out & take pics of here too, the pond is totally covered just a small area where the pump water is going in for air. J |

his eyes are blue. he's the last of the spring litter. the others got eaten. i think he felt safe by the house so he moved from the barn to the back porch. i tromped up to the bees. the snow is over my knees and i'm 5'8". i cleared the back of the hives to let air in from the bottom. hope i'm not to late. they were really covered. the bottom boards are in, but there is enough of a gap for air if the snow didn't clog them up for to long  |

Our snow lis like that Johnny Cash song: "It's Two Feet High and Arisen." Father of friends of my grandkids brought his kids over to play in the snow with my grandchildren then got is 1 ton picup highcentered in the snow in my dirveway. I watched Him struggle for over an hour to try and get it out, from what he was doing it's no wonder he got stuck. Some People just don't deserve a 4X4 with dualies on the back, stuck in 2 feet of snow on flat ground.
I"'m still recovering from my last trip outside when I slipped and hurt my back even more than it was, so I'm house bound as I'm almost bed ridden as it is.

Kathy, about the snow in the front of the colonies. Don't worry too much about it and it smothering the bees. Snow is very porous and the air comes through it regardless. I don't think you have to worry about bee death. I have to go out and clean off the bottomboards infront too, but I am not in much of a hurry, it helps to keep them warm, in my opinion, snow is a buffer.
I am going to get some pictures of my place too, we got lots of that white stuff, and it doesn't look like it is going anywhere soon.
Jody, you got some really neat pictures of your place for us to see. Rosie looks like she is really enjoying the snow.
All my barnyard crittters are not venturing out into the snow, they are staying on the walkways infront of their houses, there is a roof above the walkways,so they are protected. What a bunch of babies. The turkeys stand there on one leg, shivering, and then switch legs, shivering. Oh brother. Guess they feel kind of cold. Have a wonderful and awesome day, health. Cindi

thanks cindi. i figured the backs of the hives were not to bad. the drift was in the front. i was worried about the ice from the ice storm. it was not as bad as i thought and i only cleaned a bit around the back of the hives bottome boards. the snow and ice can stay on the rest of the hive. it will help keep them warm that snow man from earlier pics got a make over by nature. <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td>  </td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From winter2008</td></tr></table> |

We finally got out today, we have been house bound since christmas eve. We tried to get out yesterday and could not get off the property. Glad we were able to get out today, we were pretty much out of food and we had the last coffee last night. Looks like we are in for a week of wind and rain, but they say the snow is coming back next weekend, I am hoping it is not much as I start my Bee Keeper apprenticeship course on the 5th. Brian, sorry to read that you hurt your back even more, hope you are feeling better.

Hey, all you guys between Vancouver BC and Weed, CA. (You know who you are) The weather man is saying the current cold snap could last the remainder of the year with occassional snow flurries (storms) interspursed. Looks like we'll all get a White Christmas for once in every 10 years.
Brian, you got that one right!!! Couple of days til the new year, and no hope in blazes of that snow being gone, still got at least 12 inches here on the ground, white as can be....we are 45 km northeast of Vancouver. Beautiful day in this great life, Cindi |
