Are you talking about actual louvered type vents? Like on the sides of a house?

All the observation hives I have seen just uses #8 screen, on the inside portion of the hole.

yup, mine just have hole like door knob holes drilled around the frame.  there are 3 top and bottom and 5 on the long side.  one for each frame.  they are screened from the inside.

More than that, they are unconcerned with the fortunes of their village, the safety of their streets, the fate of their church and its vestry. They think that such things have nothing to do with them, that they belong to a powerful stranger called “the government.” They enjoy these goods as tenants, without a sense of ownership, and never give a thought to how they might be improved.....

For the top I drill holes and put in #7 hardware cloth so I can feed some pollen.  For the sides, I just cut a saw kerf slit for vents.
