 Two of my semi-dwarf apple trees planted spring of '07 developed blooms this morning. The bees found them immediately. Its a shame there are only about 100 flowers(at most) between the two trees for the beew sake as goldenrod was a weak bloom this year. enough rain to bloom, not enough for lots of nectar.

Goldenrod is still blooming strong, but it's the same here- dry.  What apple varieties do you have, how big is your orchard?  Back in my orchardist days I'd occasionally notice bloom "here and there" at odd times, Rome seemed to do it more than others.

I have a few different varities, but no Rome. I think the granny smith and Silken are blooming. My orchard consist of about ten semidwarf apples, 2 pears, 2 peach and 3 standard apples that came w/ the mortgage. Thses trees were in horrible form from neglect, but are doing better after 3 yrs of care, w/ more care this winter coming!

I remember buying a crabapple tree last year around this time because it had flowers on it at the store. It bloomed again correctly last spring. I think the first time it bloomed was because it was still in the pot for so long as you see with perennials in garden stores blooming much earlier than they should.

Konasdad: I wonder if the roots to your trees hit something underground, or if they have a very low number of cold hours.

I have a Granny Smith tree that did this same thing last year in the fall. I didn't get ANY apples from that tree this year     I have to wonder if it was confused about which side of the equator it was on. 

I also have about 4 varieties of crab apples and one gala and I've never seen any of them bloom in the fall.
