my bees were so gentle this spring....now I can't check them without full protective gear including gloves....is this normal?

Yes, Yes, Yes. This time of year they know that winter is coming and they are more defensive of their stores. Also less stuff for them to forage, meaning a dearth is on right now. Very normal!!

Funny. Mine were mean as all get out in the spring. They aren't too bad now. One hive has been pissy all year and hasn't changed.
