BEEKEEPING FOR DUMMIES COVER - CONTEST?
« on: August 06, 2008, 07:02:52 PM »
Hi All:

Author Howland Blackiston (author of Beekeeping for Dummies) who I worked with in 2001 during the design stage just prior to release for first printing, is now PROUD to say that his book (who's cover shot is my 15 minutes of fame  ) is looking for a NEW COVER IMAGE for the NEXT VERSION RELEASE, a lot of stuff has happened in 7 years and time for a update to fill the void!

Howland and I are writing and talking each other, as we tend to talk at least once or twice a year, just to keep in touch (he is really an extraordinary man and he is looking for an image for the upcoming release of the revised Beekeeping for Dummies.

Howland will be posting very soon with more details, but I wanted the members here to know that:

 1) the cover must be unique, it must be different than any of the other books (I still believe the original cover photo was something so unique to the non-beekeep that it caught their eyes and that leads to sales and more beekeepers!

2) Although the Author, Howland does not have final say, the publishers do - but Howland is a great go-between in handling all matters.

I hope when you read his post (coming very soon) that you start hitting your on-line photo albums, images on your drive, things you have previously posted - anything that YOU think is unique and still embodies the craft of beekeeping in a "picture says a thousand words" kinda way.

This could be a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE for any of you camera bugs, it is fair to say a relatively hi-res image is best, you may not have to post a hi-res, but if you don't have a hi-res available, likely the low-res photo will not do for cover art.

Good luck to anyone interested. I have a few great ideas myself, I'll be seeing what I can do, although as I've explained to Howland, bee-photography is something that right now is very difficult for me perform. Good luck.

Is he open to any input on new beekeeping practices?? I just love his book and this book is my first inspiration for learning beekeeping. He really led me to believe that I could actually do it. But of course, now after learning so much from this beeforum, I can see so many things in his original book that are outdated. I hope he has learned much more and will present this information in his new book.

I wish him good luck.

I would love to get suggestions from readers of my book. Much has changed since 2001 and the new edition will address many of these changes. By all means contact me directly with your suggestions. Howland Blackiston (blackiston@sprynet.com)

Annette:

Just think how sweeeeeet it was for ME to actually see the book BEFORE it was printed (in Adobe Acrobat form) that was a real thrill. Working with Howland was a wonderful experience during some very trying times with my health - I had gotten a somewhat rare version of Lymes Disease, a neurological version that attacked my spinal column, I was a mess and it is detailed in the logbook section of my site.

Howland was very patient and in the end we made a pretty good team - I had only wished I could have supplied even more photos, but I was having motor function issues, blinding headaches, noise sensitivity and on and on. Howland was on a deadline and luckily he found many other images that I had hoped to do.

But it would be really nice to see input to Howland for the revised edition, our members here surely are a huge resource of knowledge, experience from all levels of beekeeping and I can't even imagine the combined years of experience, wow!

And for what it is worth: there are no bad ideas or suggestions, it's just that some are better than others - but the important thing is gleaning knowledge and as you said Howland's book surely has lauched many a beekeeper, I like to think that collectively we do the same here, educate and entertain.
